Personal Narrative: My Half Brother

Great Essays
My half brother, Michael, has always been a very independent individual. Throughout the years, he played the role as big brother and as a dad, since mine hadn’t been around often and Michael is nine years older than I am. Because we were so close, he was never known as my half-brother, only as my older brother. Generally speaking, growing up with a drug addict father, like Michael did, his life would be more difficult since he had an addictive personality already. Teenage years were the beginning of the downward spiral for Michael. He wasn’t sure how to cope with peer pressure and fell into the bottomless pit of being a drug addict.
Finally, his ex-girlfriend, drug partner, was going back home to Americus in North Georgia. A hopeful plan

We were only supposed to be there for three. After about two days, Michael was able to wake up enough one day to write on a small white board that his nurse brought him. The first note that he wrote read “I love you Dalty girl.” That’s what Michael always called me. He was the only person that was allowed to call me Dalty. It was an amazing feeling. Eventually, he got to where he could actually wake up some and write to us since he couldn’t talk with a ventilator in his mouth. His father and grandmother showed up and talked to him for a while. But because Grammy was 80 years old, she couldn’t stay very long. No friends were allowed to visit. Mom’s rules. She didn’t want to run the risk of someone giving him pills and us being in the situation where this all began. Although Michael was released from the hospital, it wasn’t the outcome we expected. Before he was able to be discharged, Michael had the ultimate option, jail or rehab. Anyone in their right mind would choose rehab so that’s exactly what my brother did. Finally, he was able to leave the hospital. Not to mention, Anchorage Rehabilitation in Albany wasn’t terribly far from Valdosta. Therefore, we could go see him after 30 days and life would get easier. Or so we thought. Overall, this was the scariest day of my life. Was it worth it or should he have taken the drug
