My groggy eyes flutter open. (“Groggy open” and “Flutter open” do not seem to work too well together. Groggy seems to be used more to describe the state of something being weak, lazy and sleepy. I take in the sounds around me as I stare at the sky above. Tree branches filter the view of a partly cloudy sky. Birds are chirping, birds I have never heard before. Insects are performing their mating calls way up in the trees. A low drum beats in the distance, a faint shouting can be heard above it. Where am I? I try my best to build up the courage to pry my eyes from the sky – the only constant in my world. (I really liked this sentence. It was beautifully written and pretty much summed up the entire story but still allowed there to be a mystery.) The sky is always the same wherever you are. My condition is already absurd enough. (You state “As to say” and then put “Yet the words don’t actually come from its beak” the statement “As to say” would already imply that the bird does not say the

Insomnia is my personal torture, knowing that I am completely and utterly alone with my thoughts. Nothing feels real; just duplicates of a fictitious thought. Here the connection between the real and the imaginary is a severed tie. No rules apply in this unearthly dimension where my mind reconstructs life events into one distorted image. This is what haunts my mind late at night; a fantasy prone personality.…

Divine Thirteen: The Sacred Aztec Number Throughout the world, the number thirteen is fraught with varying degrees of superstition. In most cultures today, the number is seen as an ill omen meant to be avoided. Rarely will the number ever be considered lucky or have a positive connotation. In the time of the Aztec Empire in the Valley of Mexico (1318 C.E. – 1524 C.E), however, thirteen was a sacred number that reflected the beliefs of the Aztec people; not only was it symbolic for the empire’s celestial heavens, but it also played a key role in the Aztec ritual calendar and throughout the empire’s history.…

Preface I chose to write the Long Road as it is a story I can relate to. As when I was younger as we were travelling to Northern Territory for a family holiday and we ran out of diesel. I think this could help others and make them aware of bringing extra fuel or petrol when going into an uncivilised area. I thought this would be a good topic to right on as it is a real Australian stereotype to be in the outback and run out of fuel.…
