While reading The Management of Grief by Baharati Mukherjee, I noticed a couple different themes throughout. The main theme that caught my attention was having hope. In this short story, the main character Shaila loses her husband and two sons in a terrorist attack that left a whole plane full of people dead. Shaila has to come to an acceptance that her family is gone and move on. This theme is portrayed in the characters, Shaila and Judith Templeton the most, them being polar opposites.…

The leaves started to change and I finally felt like new again. It was my junior year and all I wanted to do at this point was get the heck out of high school. I had maybe two or three good friends that I could actually count on at the time. I didn’t really have any of those good friends during my lunch period and was forced to have pointless conversations with irrelevant girls who only cared about their image and how popular they are in high school. My viewpoint of high school now was completely changed.…

Grief has been both my downfall and my saving grace. No one knows how to grieve properly or correctly, but the one thing I learned from grieving at a very young age, is that grief is love; specifically, unconditional love. This unconditional love towards someone (or in my case, many people) pours out as a sign of loneliness and yearning just to hold them and hug them one final time. I understand that losing people is a part of life and can’t be avoided, but growing up, I thought my world had turned upside down when I lost the two most important people to me. Three weeks prior to my tenth birthday, my Nana passed away from Alzheimer’s Disease.…

It is normal for someone to go between the phases in the middle; sometimes feeling like they are going backwards, but the end result for normal grief will be the resolution of the absence of the loved one. There are three main theories on this grief process. Colin Murray Parkes suggests that we initially experience numbness, followed by pining, leading to disorganisation and then reorganisation. Numbness, also known as denial, is when we refuse to believe that the death has occurred. Pining is when we long for the person we have lost.…
