Beach Cabin: A Short Story

High upon a slowly crumbling clay cliff side is a quaint and lonely cabin teetering just on the threshold. Throughout the years the orange shingled, green trimmed outcast has been getting closer and closer to the edge. Maybe it is attempting to peer down to the rocky beach below. Or maybe it feels as if its time has come, now that it cannot compete with the newer and grander summer houses that are popping up behind it where the land is more secure. We wouldn’t be surprised to see that one day it was gone and washed out to sea.
TheOur cabin was built by my great grandfather just after he married my great grandmother. It is located on the western coast of Whidbey Island in the Puget Sound which is the large inlet connected to the Pacific Ocean in the upper left corner of the state of Washington. It was originally a bright grass green color with an equally green wrap around deck (My great grandmother is very eccentric and her house is a bright yellow). Since then my parents have tried some “DIY”

It was just the same as it had been, peeling green paint, bright orange shingles, and still teetering on the edge of the cliff side. I find so much security in knowing the cabin will always be there as it has been my entire life even when I move on with my life and travel to other places. When I went down to the beach, I was struck with a moment of realization. This is why I am choosing the path that I am. I am a declared marine biology major and this beach has been my inspiration. It was where my curiosity and passion for marine life began. It is what lead me to become a scuba diver and to volunteer at aquariums and beaches along the coast of Washington. I want to conserve these creatures and this landscape so that curiosity and passion can be sparked in the hearts of countless generations just like it has been sparked in

When I was young in Mastic Beach, we spent Saturday mornings on the porch eating pancakes made by mom and naming all the birds that flew by. When I was young in Mastic Beach, the scent of paint lingered on dads clothes as he taught me how to make the images in my head appear on the canvas in front of me. The clay he brought home already sculpted into figures and applauded no matter how unrecognizable they actually were. When I was young in Mastic Beach, we made frequent trips to the beach at sunset and stayed well into the night, not caring about the mosquito bites that littered our bodies.…

This story begins on a hot, summer Sunday on a neighborhood playground in Ponte Vedra Beach Florida when I was a kindergartener. The playground had one item that I liked the most which was a thing that you would hold onto then someone would push you across ten feet while your feet were hanging down. My dad came up to push me and might have pushed me a little too hard. When I got to the end of the line there was a rubber block that stops you very abruptly. Due to inertia, I was flung off of the handle over the rail, then did some crazy acrobatics in the air, Finally I landed right on top of my left wrist.…

In the first few weeks of my father’s senior year in high school he was called into the principal’s office and he was told, “Mr. Bragdon, if you don’t start showing up for school I am going to expel you.” See at the time, dad’s single mother of four was struggling to pay the bills, which meant he needed to do whatever he could to supply the family with an additional income. So he went lobstering. In response to the principal, the very next day dad walked into his office and set down on his desk a stack of books and his check from that week. He then looked at the principal and said “Sir, I believe I just made more in one week than you will in the next two months.…

Nearly every summer and winter break of my childhood was spent in the heart of Tillamook Country— a small coastal community called Neskowin. My family would gather with a rotating pool of close relatives in our favorite beach rental, dubbed the Octagon House for its distinct shape, central fire pit, and wrap around porch. For the children, the vast beaches served as open fields for soccer and football. The coarse sand an open canvas for castle blueprints and secret messages. Sand dollars switched hands as if they were currency.…

My face suddenly turns white, and I get a sinking feeling in my chest, something feels like it is missing. It is 9:38 in Mrs. Spraetz English class; I remember it like it was yesterday. The aroma of the ocean, as well as fried food and sunblock encapsulated my sense of smell as I passed by the House of Blues on my left, and the beach across the street and past the parking lot on my right. This was my all time favorite place to be. York Beach, Maine. I was visiting for a week in the summer with my friend and her family as our last summer hoorah before having to go back to school. We spent our days on the beach, gallivanting around downtown, buying tickets at Yorks Wild Kingdom to ride the ferris wheel, and ending our day by going to Fun-O-Rama to play arcade games.…
