My Grandmother’s Voice
I am often told how I resemble my grandmother by various family members. Both in
appearance and personality we are similar. I have to agree that much of her personality
has carried on through me. She is a clear root of many of my mannerisms. For example,
my perfectionism and my determination both stem from her. As I grow, I realize more
every day that she affected how I behave as a young adult. I have to wonder what is it
about her personality that effected my subconscious way of behaving all these years.
From an older perspective, I want to look back through my childhood memories and the
stories I heard about my Mommom to discover all the ways she influenced …show more content…
She smoothened the sides to a pointed crisp, then, with care, placed the soft
fabric back over the towel rack. "My mother always said anything worth doing is worth
doing right,” she told me. With that, she smiled at the memory of her mother, who I
never met. Then she made me fold the towel all over again. From that day on I always
hung my towel with care and precision.
Looking back on that incident. I realize a lot my perfectionism stemmed from my
grandmother and memories with her that had similar endings to the one above. She
taught me to do everything with care and caution, from something as frivolous as folding
a towel, to something as important as working on a school assignment. Everything had
to be done to a tee, or it was all for not to her. I realize I continue to apply this to my life,
perhaps more now than I did when I was a child. I spell check every assignment
three times before submitting it. I write out a list before I go to the grocery store, even if I
only plan on getting a few items. It takes me fifteen minutes to make a peanut butter
and jelly sandwich, to make sure the condiments are spread on evenly. I can see …show more content…

smart, your Mommom. She would have become a doctor if it wasn 't for me." It was her
intellectual strength that became the inspiration for me to peruse a career in academics.
I can also tell how her determination to never give up encouraged me. The fact that
she fought leukemia for eighteen years, when the doctor gave her a mere few months to
live. The fact she was never supposed to meet me, yet I knew her for just days short of
twelve years. Perhaps it was the urgency in her words that make me listen and follow
after them. The fact that before I was even born she knew she was not going to have
much time left with me instructed her to make what time she did have with me valuable
as possible, teaching me all she knew in that time frame. Due to her I am encouraged to
never give up on my goals, and to live a life that changes people.
