My Grandmother Told Me to Tell You She’s Sorry by Fredrick Backman is a fictional story that is told in only 372 pages. Elsa’s granny has wronged many people and suddenly dies with very short notice, leaving Elsa the difficult job to deliver the apologetic letters her granny had wrote. The story takes place in many different places. There’s the Land of Almost Awake which has many kingdoms throughout the land, such as the Land of Miamas, Elsa and Granny’s favorite. The story also takes places in various places on “Earth”, such as Elsa’s apartment, the hospital, and the many places Elsa goes to on her journey. 7 year old Elsa has a very close relationship to her grandmother. Every night she travels to the Land of Almost Awake, made of six kingdoms, each with its own strength, purpose, and interlocking mythologies. Elsa knows all six by heart. In the Land of Almost Awake, Elsa has no worries. She doesn’t have to worry about if she fits in at school, what she’s going to come home to, the fact that her parents are divorced and remarried. My Grandmother Told Me to Tell You She’s Sorry has a twist of fantasy with the Land of Almost Awake. I personally am not a fan of fantasy, but I enjoyed this book. Backman did a great job balancing out the fantasy to just fictional. There wasn’t too much fantasy, but there also wasn’t too much only fiction that the fantasy had no place in the book. This book reminds me of a book I read in 5th grade (I can’t remember the title), it was along the same lines of this book with the letters, but there was no fantasy twist. It was about a little girl who was receiving letters from an anonymous person. Although the letters being sent in My Grandmother Told Me to Tell You She’s Sorry aren’t anonymous, not many books I’ve read have had a letter sending component throughout the
