My Grandmother And My Family

My grandmother on my father’s side was Italian and Irish. Her mother was Irish and her father was Italian. They met in Boston and had three children, 2 girls (one being my grandmother) and 1 boy. My grandfather on my father’s side was Russian, as were both of his parents. Both families moved to Boston seeking a better life for their children. My grandmother’s family lived in the Irish part of town while my grandfather lived in the Russian area; they met and started dating at their high school. They got married right out of school, moved to New Jersey, and had four children, 3 boys (one being my dad) and a girl. My grandmother on my mother’s side was 100% Welsh. I can still hear my dad saying “Even if you lose everything you have in this world nobody can take away your education.” Me and all my siblings were always expected to graduate high school and then go straight on to college; it was almost assumed that’s exactly the way it would go. My oldest sister worked a few years before she decided to go on to Georgia State and my step-sister and step-brother are both currently at Florida State. I on the other hand got pregnant my first year at the technical college in town, which wasn’t a disappointment to my family besides the fact that being a single mother meant I ultimately decided to drop out and work for the time being. I had all the support in the world from my family but it was very understood on my behalf that I was expected to go back and finish college in the near future. I experienced a whole new world not only of hurt but also of extreme support. After becoming a mother I soon realized when you become a parent, young or old, you no longer have life choices revolving around only yourself but instead what is the best choice for this beautiful person I have been blessed enough to bring into this world.
