I can still hear my dad saying “Even if you lose everything you have in this world nobody can take away your education.” Me and all my siblings were always expected to graduate high school and then go straight on to college; it was almost assumed that’s exactly the way it would go. My oldest sister worked a few years before she decided to go on to Georgia State and my step-sister and step-brother are both currently at Florida State. I on the other hand got pregnant my first year at the technical college in town, which wasn’t a disappointment to my family besides the fact that being a single mother meant I ultimately decided to drop out and work for the time being. I had all the support in the world from my family but it was very understood on my behalf that I was expected to go back and finish college in the near future.
