My family came from humble beginnings in the Philippines, where the word “easy” wasn’t in their vocabulary. My grandparents worked from sunrise to sunset every day in the hot, humid farmlands. There was no such thing as a day off. My father and his siblings would come home from school and help their parents plow the field. Every day was a work day. As my family intended to work their butts off for the rest of their lives, my Grandfather had plans. He wanted to take his family to Hawaii to start a new, hopeful life where his children would get a better education and live life “easy.” Fortunately, his wish came true and his family was on their way to Hawaii.

I later intend to become a computer hardware engineer. I want to take this path because I’ve been linked to computers my whole life. As a kid, I would tinker with my father’s old PC. I played games and downloaded random files. I would be on the computer for hours trying to get rid of a virus that my game brought up. A few years later into my childhood, I started to wonder what this device was comprised of and how it worked. Fortunately, I was able to get a few pointers from my Uncle Jr., who was in college. He showed me how to take a computer apart and he explained what each part was and how it worked. I was able to learn the very basics of computer software and hardware. In spite of being exposed to the basic information, I’m excited about designing and building
