My father grew up in the middle class, although according to him, my Grandfather Bud was a “penny pincher.” Apparently, my grandfather’s family felt the effects of the Great Depression, when he was younger, which instilled a sense of conservative financial values. My grandfather refused to pay anyone to repair broken objects around the house, so he and my father were “Mr. Fix-it” of their household. Likewise, my father would narrate stories of my grandfather driving around for “hours” to find the cheapest gas in town, even if there was only a one cent difference, my grandfather was determined.
