My Graduating High School

Growing up in a small, poverty stricken community has taught me many lessons throughout the years. The greatest lesson of all being that anything worth having in life is not simply handed to you, but rather its earned through hard work and dedication. This could simply be by getting an A on a book report, getting a part time job, or earning an Associate’s Degree before you receive your high school diploma. In my case, I was able to accomplish all three during my high school career. As I ventured off into higher education, I kept the same mindset. I entered college as a junior at the mere age of eighteen which is a big accomplishment in itself. Some people my age aren’t even able to graduate high school let alone. My first semester in college was a little tough, but I persevered through it. However, I made some choices that affected me, but I wasn’t aware of the effect until after the fact. …show more content…
I had already received these two credits for my Associates’ Degree. However, after much thinking and consideration from my advisor, it was decided that retaking the two courses at the University level would be best in regards to my coursework, academic performance, and GPA. I received pretty good grades in these two courses beforehand, however, I felt my grades were handed to me and weren’t really earned. I didn’t feel comfortable at all jumping straight into the higher level classes when I knew I didn’t really learn anything in the lower levels classes. I want to be able to move up in the ladder with a full understanding of what came before

In the Spring of last year, it was my Junior year, one of the most critical years in high school. It’s the year that colleges look at the most, also it was the year that I was in some of the most challenging classes. Mostly honors, a lot of homework, and tests to go along with it. Studying would take me until late at night, and even on weekends, all day long. When it’s the end of the term everyone checks their grades for their report cards, and progress reports.…

Growing up struggling does not mean you are destined for a future of failure. In fact it can strengthen you in ways you are not aware of to prepare you for the challenges ahead. One of my proudest moments was hearing my name called at Midwestern State University to receive my Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. As I looked across the room and saw the tears streaming down my mom’s face it I couldn’t help but choke up.…

This is usually the first instance in which students must have to take charge of themselves in a more direct, forward sense; not only when dealing with the heightening of academic expectations, but…

A shift that causes much fear is that of going from a high school student and into a college student because of been unaware of what to expect or not knowing how to handle a situation due to lack of knowledge. The change from a life completely dependent upon my parents to a life where I am solely responsible for myself and all my actions was perhaps the most challenging aspect of this semester. I have come to realize how much my experiences inside and outside of my classes will shape me throughout my time at Texas A&M. Since my 4-year plan has been shortened to a 2-year plan due to my determination to graduate early, I have come to the realization that I need to mature at a much faster pace. During my first two months at Texas A&M, I began to have second thoughts about wanting to graduate early, because i was unsure if I would be able to keep up academically and socially. I realized the vast amount of maturity and responsibility I would need to approach my decisions with and many times I felt quite overwhelmed. My personal feelings in the beginning of the semester really engendered self-doubt, but were all part of the drastic change I was not accustomed to.…

When I think of the American Dream I think about using education as a means to rise above what you came from. It doesn’t necessarily mean being filthy rich or famous but living comfortably and being able to enjoy certain luxuries and indulgences (i.e. travelling, going out to eat, taking vacations, having your own car, owning a home, etc.) without worrying about how you are going to pay the bills next month. In terms of education the American Dream still exists. Many people are still going to college and trying to obtain degrees as a means to achieve the American Dream however, there are several factors making it harder for people to achieve the American Dream by going to college.…

Gordon B. Hinckley had once said something along the lines of hard work paying off, if effort is enforced into the work. Over the years I’ve had in high school I have really absorbed the aspect of this, being able to work up and achieve opportunities for the preparation in the outside world. Seventh and eighth grade having to understand the concepts in the athletic sport tennis was hard for me to comprehend. Actually being able to have proper etiquette of holding a tennis racquet was key, but being able to hit a tennis ball was a ‘whole other ball game.’ All two years of playing tennis in middle school I can not remember a single time me nor my tennis partner won a match.…

Throughout my life, I have always been told that I must go to college no matter what. At first, I did not really think about it that much, but now that I am a college student, I really had to get my stuff in order and take action while I attended to college. And that is exactly what I did. During the fall semester of 2016, at Pasadena City College, I was able to become a part of the Pathways program, join the Lancers for Life program, and was even able to secure a job position within Ralph’s. However, what I felt most accomplished about would be of all the classes that I have taken.…
