The first weeks of practice were simple: run, lift, run, fight, run, and go home. Every day for seven hours in the hot Texas sun. We would kill our bodies and our coaches would build our minds. I have goals for my life that I plan to reach. I couldn’t take another step toward those goals without leaving my anchor behind. While my mom tried to keep our ship afloat, she held me back from reaching my goals. As our relationship deterred, the decision loomed over my head as a possible way out of that life and in to the life I now have. I took that chance and it has only led to success for myself and my mother. I now understand how quickly life can change. One moment you can be on top of the world, going out to eat every night and buying expensive clothes, the next you can’t even afford to live in a house.
