At a very young age, my parents divorced. My brother, sister and I moved out of my father 's house and into a small house a couple blocks away. Quickly moving through my past, I moved to an apartment complex and in to a new school district. We were slowly rebuilding our lives. One summer I moved, this time to a newly built house and, once again, a new school. I thought I knew what instability was like, little did I know what was coming. I was sixteen and hungry for what junior year would bring to me. My mother had just been promoted and I had reserved a spot on the football team. Before I knew it, the rug was out from beneath me and I was plopped on my rear end with nothing to rely on beyond myself.
The first weeks of practice were simple: run, lift, run, fight, run, and go home. Every day for seven hours in the hot Texas sun. We would kill our bodies and our coaches would build our minds. Our bodies would take care of themselves and we’d go out and do it again the next day. All of us, beasts in the pits of Hell for weeks on end. One day, it started to rain and rain it did. After a swift jog up to the indoor practice field, we dried off and resumed drills.

I have goals for my life that I plan to reach. I couldn’t take another step toward those goals without leaving my anchor behind. While my mom tried to keep our ship afloat, she held me back from reaching my goals. As our relationship deterred, the decision loomed over my head as a possible way out of that life and in to the life I now have. I took that chance and it has only led to success for myself and my mother. I now understand how quickly life can change. One moment you can be on top of the world, going out to eat every night and buying expensive clothes, the next you can’t even afford to live in a house. All of the challenges my household has faced really brought everything into perspective. I can only continue to face the challenges presented to

The Path to a Higher Education “Without education, you are not going anywhere in this world” (Malcolm X). In both Frederick Douglass’ article “Learning to Read” and in Malcolm X’s article “A Homemade Education” they discuss the challenges and obstacles that they had to overcome. Frederick Douglass was a man that was born in the horrors of slavery and later became a famous abolitionist speaker in the north. Malcolm X may not have been a man born into slavery, but he was still treated poorly because of his race. X later became a well-known leader during the Civil Rights Movement.…

When I was fifteen my mom had decided to uproot our lives in Michigan to move to a small town in Florida. It started when my mom fell in love with a business partner, Keith, whom she had talked on the phone with for months. She then had flown to Florida to meet with him several times for over the course of a year. When they decided that they could no longer live apart, the decision was made that my mom and I would move from everything we had ever known, to move to a small Florida town. At the time I thought this was the worst thing that could ever happen to my fifteen year old self, however, our move turned out to be the best decision my mom had ever made.…

For most of my life, I always knew I would do something in healthcare; however, I was just never sure what it would be. To be honest, even though I still don’t know, I pray it will be a blessing to others. To begin with at the age of thirteen (13), my brother injured his knee by trying to jump over guardrails. He ran back to the house with his knee cut to the bone.…

My boyfriend of three years broke up with me; my heart was shattered like a mirror on the ground, cracked and pieces missing. I never thought that this would affect me so much. I couldn’t let everyone see how upset I was, so I hid my emotions behind a fake smile that no one ever knew existed. That is where all my problems started; something started to grow inside of me like an embryo of a new unborn child. Slowly but surely I sank into a dark abyss of depression.…

Middle School Mid-Life Crisis Middle school, a time of cringe worthy moments and regret. I like to refer to this story as my “Middle School Mid-Life Crisis”, since I questioned the purpose of going to school almost every day, and never felt motivated to do anything. Dreading almost every day of school, not having stable mental, emotional, or physical health, and feeling dissatisfied with myself as a student. My mind set was always on countdown mode, “I just have to make it through this class period. I only have 20 more problems to do.”…

The main reason why I think that HACC is the best choice for me is because of the cost. The rates per credit are around $250 and that is for in-state residents. The total cost for a commuter would be around $13,750 for a student who is full time, which means they are taking 12 credits per term (Stager). This price of $13,750 includes the price of books, supplies, food, and transportation and it is an average price for all HACC students (HACC.edu). I think that I could easily cut some of the cost by trying to buy my books online for a cheaper price or even eating at home to save a lot of money.…

I grew up with three brothers and a single mother. The life we lived was not the average person’s life because my brothers and I have been put through so much at such a young age that we didn’t really register what was truly happening. By the time we would start to catch on to what was happening, we would already be on the move. That was pretty much our life, a life that was unstable. As we watched our mother get fired or let go job after job, it began to be a very hard life to live.…
