My Goals I Learned In My Second Semester

Great Essays
At the end of the first semester, I set two goals that I wanted to accomplish throughout the second semester. The first goal was to make my essays stronger by not writing so much, and to create sentences that weren’t too wordy and more meaningful. My second goal was to enhance my vocabulary and not be so redundant. To achieve my first writing goal, I reread my essays multiple times checking to see if I could get rid of any unnecessary words . Rereading my work also went along with my second goal. But instead of taking out words, I exchanged them for more advanced vocabulary. Although I think I did a good job accomplishing my two goals, a new goal emerged during second semester. That goal was to become a better public speaker. My thought for improvement was to have a better attitude when it came to giving speeches. I know the more I present in front of an audience, the more comfortable I will get …show more content…
The essay from second semester that proves that I am able to write an effective introductory paragraph is from the “Crossroad” essay. The introduction states, “For me and probably most people, there are not many things worse than a dog dying. Especially when it is a dog that you have grown up with and loved very much. Would you rather have your dog live in pain, or put your sweet angel down? My family and I decided to put our precious dog down.”

Along with my introductions, I truly believe my conclusion paragraphs have improved too. The “Justifiable Killings” essay proved this point. The essay concludes with, "In conclusion, killing is justifiable in regards to criminals facing the death penalty, a woman's right to abort an unborn child, and a soldier protecting their country in war. In the novel, George could justify his decision to kill Lennie, to protect him from a life of misery. So, is Of Mice and Men a story of friendship or murder? The answer is

but I find myself taking longer to write and complete essays. I find it difficult to write down my ideas and organize them in a way that makes sense, which is why my essays take so long to write. By the time I have completed an essay my brain is fried and I no longer want to make an effort to read through it and fix my grammar. Third quarter has been the most difficult for me and I'm slowly trying to redeem myself and my writing.…

My introduction paragraph was not up to the senior level writing. My writing simply didn’t make a clear path that allowed me to carry my ideas throughout the whole paper. The flow of each sentence was choppy and that made it difficult for anyone reading this paper get into the essay; therefore, I need to start including transitional words, phrase, or sentence so the reader and I can easily read my essay faster and with ease. Another thing that I would change is the thesis that I made.…

Coming into English 101, I really did not know what to expect. This was my first college writing class so I had no idea what it was going to be like. In high school I would have considered myself to be a decent writer, not the best or not the worst. I would never impress anyone with my writing skills but I could still come across as educated on my topic.…

On the first day of class, I felt pretty confident about my level of skills as a writer, but little did I know there were a lot of aspects in my writing that could be improved. As time progressed and we learned more about colloquial language and little things I could change in my essays to further advance and improve my writing. Now, I feel even more confident about my writing and know that all of these little changes I can make in my writing create a better flow of ideas and a higher level of formality. I feel that throughout this semester I have been greatly challenged as a writer and have advanced the most that I ever have in writing within such a short period of time. I have put in a lot time and effort into this class in order to create…

My writing experience: I didn’t start to read until I was in first grade. Every week we would go to library to check-out two books and take a test on the books we read on a computer. Every day in English we read a short story to ourselves then we would play games dealing with the story to make it fun. To be honest I never really did a lot of writing in Elementary , Middle, or High school so I can’t pinpoint when I started writing. In essay writing I learned its always good to express yourself with your own opinion.…

The first essay that I wrote for EN100 was the Literacy Narrative Essay. Although this assignment seemed dreadful, this essay made me realize how much was expected of me, and how far my writing was from those expectations. Throughout the course of the semester, my writing vastly improved, getting closer and closer to meeting expectations. The Discourse Community Essay was so close to those expectations, and the Informative Essay was right where I wanted it to be.…

First semester was was filled with the essentials of writing. The things you need to know how to do like using transition words or how to mimic your introduction in your conclusion. Using transition words is a skill we all learn in elementary school, but during first semester we revisited the idea. We improved our vocabulary of transitions and learn the importance of them. So in second semester I knew this was a important thing to use in my writing.…

Throughout the semester, I was required to write essays for EN 101. In previous years, I wrote mostly the same style of essays, however, this semester I was required to write many different styles of essays. The most important criteria of a good essay is capturing the reader’s attention with a strong introduction paragraph. Over the course of this semester in my English 1320 class I have seen a drastic change throughout my writing style. Although I still have difficulties with a few writing tasks, I believe that I have improved significantly throughout this course. I have found that with my professor’s guidance along with my own personal editing that my grades have increased. Although it is difficult to not get caught up in simply striving for a letter grade or attaining a 4.0 grade point average, I would like to believe that my main goal was different. Of course I would love to achieve those goals as well, but overall my primary goal throughout this class was to become more relaxed and comfortable in my writings, to use new strategies and proper kinds of conventions, and to truly find a way to express my passion on these papers.…

I have learned so much about myself from taking this class. The biggest thing that I have learned from the self-assessments is that I am very intrinsically motivated. I believe this to be true because I am truly invested in my education and have set goals that I am working toward completing. Currently I have some short term and long term goals that I am working toward achieving. Some of my short term goals are finishing this semester, saving enough money at work to buy a car and get a place of my own to live, and making sure I get registered and enrolled for next semester.…

I worry about how the essay looks, and how it’s read. I worry about repeating words forgetting the most important part; whether my ideas are repeated, presented properly, concluded, or even modified while I rewrite my essay. Reading Sommer’s essays about scholarly writings, and revision strategies, they confirm what I believe about student’s failure to take their own ideas into account while focusing on thesis statements and authorities words. However It challenged what I had assumed that students think of revising as a process that “Requires lexical changes but not semantic changes”(Sommers 382) While to professional writers it’s a process of “Finding the form or the shape of the argument”(Sommers 384). Sommers brings many important strategies of writings under the consideration of students, and helps introduce them to future scholarly writings in…
