I also gained tremendous encouragement from this motto when I decided to pursue a nursing career in my forties. Some of my family and friends have been telling me that it’s unwise to give up my business and start a new career in a different field at my age. They think I’m at a huge disadvantage compared to most of my young classmates. However, I believe that my genuine interest and enthusiasm in nursing will help me to excel in this field and achieve my career goal. After all, “nothing is impossible to a willing heart”.…

The WDHS scholarship committee should select me as their nominee for these scholarships because as a driven student, I devote myself to successfully take advantage of the opportunities these scholarships will offer me. I am a well rounded student who goes above and beyond on everything I undertake, whether it be academics, athletics, extracurriculars, leadership, or service. While I am a high-achieving student, I prefer to be sought as a scholar-one for whom knowledge is about more than test scores and grades, and for whom learning is an appetite rather than a means to an end. To me, education is the key to success; therefore, my passion for education is connected with my desire to help others.…

My Personal Goal Statement Every day I wake up, I ask myself how I can make a difference. This question has helped shape my personal values and principles and directed my path into the nursing field. Growing up in West Africa and witnessing firsthand the sufferings and impoverishment of the people around me, I developed a sense of compassion and willingness to make a difference and help alleviate their sufferings and put a smile on their faces. Healthcare delivery and poverty are two major underlying factors in the challenges faced in Africa, thus, when I got an opportunity to come into the United States, it was my golden ticket to finally give back to the community and make a difference. If I was to receive this scholarship it would not simply be another opportunity or thing to share around the table on Thanksgiving Day when I speak of my gratitude. This opportunity would change my life; my views would be uprooted and replanted leaving me in a molded and better state than before. My heart would be temporarily filled as my itch to travel and understand would be scratched. My heart would only be satisfied for a time because this would be the catalyst to a life of exploration and enrichment. I know that once my feet are planted in the soil of another nation and my word exchanged with new people, my spirit will eternally crave more; more people, more sights, more perspective, and more time.…

In a dream, I sit at an old desk by an open window. A cool breeze ruffles all the papers strewn across the desk surface, accompanied by the triumphant shouts of playing children. From a back bedroom the lovely but imperfect melody of an instrument being practiced provides a soundtrack for my life, 10 years from now. Instinctively I understand that my ‘official’ career is in Critical Care nursing; though in the days of the dream, I only work part-time. I have a large family, violin students, and books to write.…
