Students like to be immersed in the story, where it pertains to them. If I can teach a subject where the students see how it affects them, they are more likely to hold on to the new information. Another way to increase student engagement is to ask questions. Questions will help them acquire critical thinking skills and therefore keep them engaged. I also want to teach the subject in more than one way. Each student utilizes a different learning style that helps him/her learn. For example, one student learns best by hearing, so a lecture might be best for the student to retain the information. However, another student may absorb the subject matter by using visual aids. As a prior salesperson, I found that when I displayed enthusiasm and zeal towards a product, I was able to sell it compared to showing no interest. Customers like students can tell when someone is fascinated about something because it is displayed in their eyes, face, and body language. A person who is passionate about what his/her is teaching has a sparkle in his/her eyes when creating eye contact with the learner.
