My Goals For College

College is a time for personal growth and self-exploration. A transitional period from the womb of the educational field to the world of the work force. To achieve greatness, one cannot wander; goals must be set to accomplish what many would consider impossible. During my high school days, I would have never thought that in college I would have made it onto the dean’s list with a 3.71 GPA. Now I have something to strive for, an ambition to make it onto the president’s list with at least a GPA of 3.75. In terms of my future career, I intend to utilize services such as the Compass, Career Services, or ASK to expand my network. My academic journey has not been smooth or easy, but it has helped to create the person I am today: an inquisitive, intelligent, driven, resourceful woman with the courage to challenge myself with demanding goals and the confidence to know that I am capable of achieving them. I was a model student throughout my early years of school, achieving good grades and demonstrating a tremendous interest in learning; however, when I became the victim of bullying incidents in high school, my academic progress was stifled. After high school, I felt that I needed time to determine my direction in education and in life before entering college; therefore, I worked until I was 20, when I began my studies at Nassau Community College (NCC). Although I enjoyed returning to an academic environment, I was still searching for my calling, and the extensive student population made it extremely difficult to obtain guidance from advisors or faculty. My experience at NCC was terminated abruptly when I badly broke my leg and needed to withdraw from school for the medical attention I required.…

Whether it was taking time out of my day to attend the first general body meeting of debate team or filling out the application for National Society of Collegiate Scholars, I began my success by putting my foot out into the unknown without fully expecting what I was going to get out of it. Having the adventurous mind to try out new things has opened my mind greatly to leadership opportunities, service, scholarship, and social justice. Topics and initiatives that I would have never thought to be conversing about or partaking in are now major parts of my everyday life. Through NSCS and every other organization or club I’m a part of, I have become a more active, accommodating, and out spoken person. To a first generation college student, obtaining success in college can often seem like a daunting task and many might shrivel in fear of the expectations.…

Schreiner, in hopes it would give college students like me a simple, yet extremely helpful tool to guide them through their college experience. In this book one can find things called Signature Themes. The signature themes are given to readers after they take the “Clifton StrengthsFinder”.…

In college, it has become increasingly common for students to be lackadaisical when dressing themselves for class in the morning. The obvious lack of effort when it comes to one’s attire can reveal how serious they view their education, along with the amount of respect a person holds for his or her professor. The vast majority of universities do not require students to follow any type of dress code, leaving students a free range of opportunities when choosing what type of clothing they decide to wear to class. With this freedom, comes a responsibility to dress appropriately for class. Deciphering what “Dressing for Success” indicates is often difficult due to the dissimilarity of people’s opinions.…
