What Are The Challenges Of Earning My Degree In Nursing

Improved Essays
There are numerous difficulties that I will face as I work toward my goal of earning my degree in nursing. I am a mother of a little boy with special needs. My son has Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome and he’s sick frequently. When my son gets sick, he usually has seizures, so unless someone is CPR certified, I don’t let anyone watch him. That being said, child care for my son will be one of the biggest complications I will face. With that being said, I will miss a lot of classes and it will be a set-back. Finances may also be a problem I face toward earning my degree. I don’t have a very established financial situation, but to be straightforward, what college student does have all of their finances together? Life pitches unexpected set-backs …show more content…
In accumulation to the restraining order, he doesn’t pay court-ordered child support, so that only increases the court dates! If my son’s father would just comply with the court’s orders and be a decent father, this wouldn’t be a problem that influences my education. Court dates are not the only thing that prevents me from making it to school. Like indicated previously, I am the mother of a sick child, there will always be unexpected hospital visits and no one to care for my child while I’m attending classes. I try to always stay a little bit ahead on my homework and studying, just in case the unexpected situations arise. Staying one step ahead is all I can do in circumstances such as that, it is impossible to prevent the …show more content…
I have a car payment and phone payment to pay once-a-month and I struggle with that, both of those bills are currently late. The costs of gasoline, tuition, and textbooks certainly influences my financial situation; and not in a respectable way! My son is three years old, and unless you have a small child, you will, under no circumstances, understand how much a child will cost on a day-to-day basis. From diapers to a toy he requests at the grocery store. My son’s father does not pay child support so I’m responsible for this all on my own. Until I get out of college, I will struggle with my financial situation. Picking up hours at work will not work for me since I can only work on the days I have someone to care for my child, which is not often. My biggest funding support, recently, was financial aid. Financial aid rewarded for my tuition, books, college fees, and they’re mailing me a check for $1,800, that is the only way my bills are being paid this month. I try not to eat out as frequently or spend money on things I do not need, to prevent my financial difficulties from getting any

I am a member of Phi Sigma Tau International Honor Society, Scholars Without Borders, and The National Society for Collegiate Scholars. I was awarded, Outstanding Youth/Student Volunteer by Association of Fundraising Professionals for National Philanthropy Day, Emerging Leader from the Dean of Students, and Dean's List. Starting my first year, I felt very fortunate; not only because I was the first in my family to have access to a college education, but because I knew I had my first year of college covered thanks to the help of grants and scholarships. From looking at my cost of attendance this coming school year, I see that I am still $1,651. Being concerned about having enough money to pay for housing is a concern that will prevent me from focusing on my academics and education.…

I also gained tremendous encouragement from this motto when I decided to pursue a nursing career in my forties. Some of my family and friends have been telling me that it’s unwise to give up my business and start a new career in a different field at my age. They think I’m at a huge disadvantage compared to most of my young classmates. However, I believe that my genuine interest and enthusiasm in nursing will help me to excel in this field and achieve my career goal. After all, “nothing is impossible to a willing heart”.…

Similar to completing nursing school, deciding to complete the BSN program is going to be a team effort and all hands are going to need to be on deck. I am going to need support from family, friends, and coworkers in order to be successful. I am telling everyone who is close to me and cares about my future about why I am returning to school.…

Even though I applied for financial aid I was denied. I came to learn that the federal formula was weighted not only by income but also by assets. So my parent’s small nest egg, a modest home with sundry repairs to come and a mortgage to be paid every month for the next ten years, counted against me. I’d attend classes during the early morning hours, late afternoons, evenings and weekends as long as it didn’t interfere with my work hours. When breaks came around, while some of my friends were off on vacation or volunteering in faraway countries, I worked extra hours.…

In my first semester, it felt like 60-hour work weeks from 30 hours at my part time job to 14 hours a week of in class work to 16 hours of self study and then finally conventions, clubs and volunteering to give back to the community that has done so much for me. I would have taken out a student loan to pay for college but because of my part time work to assist my parents with our living situation I wasn’t able to justify the student loan. My parents work very hard for what we have and it is harder and harder to support ourselves with the high rental prices in metro Vancouver let alone the rising cost of tuition. While I was sitting in a politics and ethics class my professor divulged whether it was acceptable for governments to disallow students from declaring bankruptcy on student loans and through the conversation we learned that he paid $2014.95 a year at university accounting for inflation when he was pursuing his bachelors. In comparison to my professor I pay close to that amount every semester; that includes tuition, student fees, books, U-pass.…

Freedom, according to most, would be defined simply as the first amendment of the United States Constitution. “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. ”1 Or do they think of it as independence? Putting off important life events, because the money (after paying all of those student loan bills) just isn't there? Take heart, you are not alone. According to Michael T. The average amount of student loan debt is $25,000, and for many students who had to rely on financial aid the numbers are significantly higher.…
