Becoming an AGPCNP will provide me with the knowledge and training to safely and effectively treat adult patients across the lifespan. Although I entered this program planning to work as an FNP, experiences during the pre-specialty year have confirmed my passion for the adult patient. Specifically, I hope to serve rural communities as a primary care provider, focusing my practice on the management of chronic disease in older adults. My passion for older adults is rooted in the experiences I had throughout the summers of my undergraduate career. I spent my summers with a nonprofit in rural North Carolina partnering with churches, social workers, and businesses to complete home repair for low-income families.…

My pursuit of a medical degree is greatly strengthened by the Columbia University Public Health Scholars Program (SPHSP). Prior to matriculation from the program my source of motivation held no true direction, I wanted to simply “help people”. During SPHSP I was exposed to federally qualified health centers (FQHC) and my eyes were opened to new medium to help people. I admired the measures that FQHC put in place to effectively serve a population of people that, under normal circumstances, would not be able pursue healthcare. FQHCs aligned closely to the sense of equity that I began to develop as I was exposed to communities suffering from health disparities over the course of the internship.…

Nurses are champions in adapting to change and identifying creative measures to help modify their practice, so it is not surprising that they are eager to meet these challenges head on. The assumption has been made that the delegation of physician care to FNPs will lead to better use of resources, however nurses must continue to be mindful of the possible risks and implications that may accompany these demands. Sacrificing nursing values cannot be tolerated. It continues to be a slippery slope as nurses cross the line into a medical role while maintaining a nursing framework. Having a concrete understanding of nursing theory and nursing values will help preserve the nursing identity during the newest healthcare…

It is this passion and commitment to providing high-quality health care within the community that fuels my aspiration and desire to become a pediatric nurse practitioner (PNP) within a community health setting. While I love being a nurse and all that it encompasses, I believe that in the role of a PNP, I will have an even greater opportunity to teach, serve, and treat children and their families within the communities in which they live. Reflection On Professional Organizations I have been conducting research on some professional organizations and I have determined that ASHP would be a good match for me. This is because ASHP is an organization that is heavily involved in advocating legislation to benefit pharmacists, patients, and the health care system.
