Every day the boy would come to the tree and play on her branches, climb her trunk, and eat her apples. then as the boy got older he stopped coming as much and would only come when he wanted something from the tree. first, it was her apple to sell in town to make money, then it was her branches to build a house, so he could get a wife and have kids. Then finally her trunk to build a boat and sail away, then when the boy came back the tree was just a stump.…

“The Giving Tree” by Shel Silverstein may seem like a children’s book to others, but there is a more meaning to this book. Scholars have long debated what “The Giving Tree” seeks to impart to its readers beyond unselfishness. Some say it’s actually the story of God and humankind,or Mother Nature and society, or the classic parent-child relationship,or unrequited romantic love. I believe that there are three main lessons that are in the story:don’t keep score, you can’t outrun (or out-canoe) your problems, and say please and thank you.…

Reciprocity constitutes a major exchange system in every society. Reciprocal exchange involves the transfer of goods and services between two people or groups based on role obligations. Birthday and holiday gift giving is a fine example of reciprocity, as during these occasions, we exchange goods not because we necessarily need or want them, but because we are expected to do so as part of our status and role. If we fail in our reciprocal obligations, we signal an unwillingness to continue the relationship. The main idea behind reciprocal exchange is the concept of giving.…
