A life of significance is about serving those who need your gifts, your leadership, your purpose.” I live in a bubble: wealth, comfort, education, and love. Not everyone in our world lives like this, not even everyone in our country lives like this. I knew there were people that were starving, homeless, abused, or ignored; what I did not know was how many. I had never been out of the country until last December. My family decided to take a trip to Guatemala. It was going to be a humanitarian trip before our guide cancelled on us, so we ended up going to tour the major sites and to see some of the villages.
The flight landed early in the morning and

Resting my head on the seat and closing my eyes, I half listened to them. Within about ten minutes of driving, I heard the word Mormon. I looked up and listened closer to what they were talking about. He had asked if we were Mormon, since we were from Utah and had so many kids. I was surprised that he, being from a different country, could tell within minutes that my family was Mormon. I tried to keep listening, but my stomach would not let me look anywhere but the window. I quietly watched the countryside go from farms to the capital, Guatemala …show more content…
I was appalling to me, but it was an incredible eye opening experience. The bubble that I live in has not been burst yet, but it has become thinner. Ever since that trip I have been more aware about how many people live in a state of poverty where life is almost unbearable. One of my goals is to go bad and help in any way that I can to help those people. If I could change just one person’s life it would mean the world to me, because I know that seeing how they are living changed my life. It made me feel spiritual in so many ways. All of the sudden I had the urge of saying a prayer, then after that I began to think about people in my life and how they are a big part of who I am. My mind started going places it has never been. I think I came out of that experience a slightly different person. It reminds me of Rohlheiser’s three aspects of what constitutes the soul; energy, inner clarity, and connectedness.…

I went to the Galapagos Islands and learned so much from my two week period of being there. I got to see amazing animals and meet very interesting people that I would have never encountered if I never would have ventured outside of my small home town Mooresville North Carolina. Seeing something in real life instead of a book or movie is a real eye opener. Many people do not get to see new cultures because of money or just have no interest in seeing new things. I feel very privileged that in my short lifetime I had the opportunity to go places and see things that most people will never get the chance to see in their lifetime.…

In the 19 years I have been alive, I have lived in three states, five towns, eight houses, and now, two countries. Right before I finished high school my parents decided to move to Guatemala. I welcomed the change because I had been visiting Guatemala every summer since I was 15, and my heart always seemed at peace there. The closest I perpetually felt at home was when I lived in Guatemala, though I resided there for a short time. Every day greeted me with words rolling off my tongue I previously did not know, the taste of delicious and unique foods, and a breathtaking landscape, complete with the view of an active volcano outside of my bedroom window.…

I have experienced much grace through the trouble and poverty I have witnessed through my mission trips to Guatemala. I went to Guatemala June 9-16, 2014, and August 4-11, 2015 (and I plan on going back August 2016). Seeing the conditions these people live in daily, has helped me take to heart the kind of help they are in need of. Many of these people have no home, no family or no money to provide for their family, yet they are still thankful. Most of the time little boys and girls won’t have any shoes on their feet or their clothes will be far too small.…
