Self Reflection On Student Learning

Superior Essays
This field experience confirmed my general knowledge in practices I use to promote student learning. As a new teacher, I continue to question my abilities. I wonder if what I am doing will pan out successfully or if my new lesson plan or activity will only create more confusion amongst the students. It is difficult to venture out into new territory when you are among teachers who have been using and sharing lessons that prove successful results. There are area I could use improvement in such as data analysis and better implementation of tools and strategies that would help my diverse population of students.

A system to track student data would help me get a better picture of what the data is saying. A rubric to review while reading free responses would allow me to gauge their understanding. However, from the lesson I created in the theory of evolution unit, my students were overall successful. I tailored most of the formative assessment to be easily analyzed by using multiple choice, true false statements or yes and no questions. I was surprised at how many students were under the various misconceptions asked from the pre-assessment. That, of itself, helped me construct a platform to pose questions and clarify ideas during small groups or whole class discussions. The objectives for the unit were achieved. Student proved to be proficient in their understanding of the theory of evolution. 97% of the class passed the summative assessment for the unit.
This field experience increased my desire to promote social change in my classroom. In many societies, teachers are looked as natural leaders who bring out positive change in the lives of others (ILO, 2015). I want my students to begin to question their surroundings and thoughts as

Meaning that the teacher pushes themselves and their students to take a step back and to truly think about what is important to them and why this is important. The teacher as an activist would them help students explore how to change circumstances they do not agree with. Laura also said that a teacher activist does not recognize “a neat split between their work and their lives…they want to use each for the enrichment of the other” (p. 82). Finally, Laura’s vision calls for joy in education. She reminds us through many descriptions of Leif Gustavson’s book, Youth Learning on Their Own Terms (2007), that teachers need to make learning youth-oriented by being ethnographers and amateurs in the classroom.…

Assignment Questions 1. List three things you learned about assessment and measurement in the context of the video discussions. First and foremost, properly conceived assessment is an essential aspect of education. The educational review process and all associated components should be routinely examined to ensure quality as well as make improvements. Because learning is a very complex endeavor, it is important to create measurement instruments that are sufficiently comprehensive and applicable (Gronlund, 2013).…

Data collected from assessments is also used to inform practice and to assist in the planning of future lessons and report to parents during interviews and on report cards. Assessments and reporting are key components of the curriculum planning process (Arthur et al., 2010). This information / data is also given to administration, informing them of learned concepts and each child’s progress and learning development. Assessments can be done during conferencing with student and teacher, with partners, as a whole group and even the whole class. Assessment can take many forms and is certainly much wider that traditional forms of objective tests and essays (Marsh, 2010).…

I believe academics can play an influential role in shaping the minds of current and future leaders around these challenges by providing a humanistic framework for students and providing a safe environment in which to struggle with conceptual, ethical and practical issues. I aspire to promote a range of dialogues and conversations in the classroom through the integration of a servant leadership in my classroom, along with androgogical principles and an action science orientation. My hope is that the efficacious application of these four theories and principles in the classroom can create an intellectual setting that will inform students’ values, encourage their self-direction, and foster social justice now and in the…

I have one job that I absolutely love and another one that I do not care for very much, I did not really understand why because I get along well with my coworkers and higher ups. As our course went on and I started to understand business some more I then realized why there were certain things that were shaping my views about my jobs. One big thing that I noticed was the team work at my jobs.…

During my fieldwork at P.S. 45 John Tyler School I was able to see life-worlds pedagogy firsthand. I observed in a fourth grade Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) classroom with Ms. Stocker and Mrs. Morales. This classroom would be placed at level eight on a Likert scale in accordance to life-worlds pedagogy. This classroom was extremely interactive and the teachers often allowed the children to dictate the themes of the lessons. The teachers tried their best to make sure that the children had an influence on what they were learning and how they learned best.…

During the presentation, group one gave great ways on how we can address and end racism in the classroom. As teachers, we should treat each student equally and get to know each student individually. We should include opportunities for students to learn about different backgrounds and cultures, as well as being informed about these differences ourselves. For example, we can entwine “diversity days” into the curriculum, by doing this the students will become more aware and understanding of each other’s backgrounds. We can include more group work and make sure the groups are diverse, so that students of outside cultures are able to work together.…

Section 4: Differentiating Instruction through Technology When considering the importance of a student-centered classroom an educator must remember that “it is not about what the teacher is doing or what the teacher has done; it’s about what the students are doing and what the students can do in the future”. (Tarte, 2013) Education within school has certainly changed quickly these days. The way an educator once believed that students should be sitting quietly as the teacher stood up in front of the class gushing out information and insight for their brains to grasp is no longer the case.…

We are sharing our personal knowledge with those who will one day control the world. We put a little piece of ourselves in every student we encounter.
