General Education Reflection

My group’s topic for discussion was general education requirements at Penn State University. We used the P-MOPS problem-solving technique to discuss and furthermore decide on a solution to the general education issue. I believe we effectively accomplished our task by providing a legitimate solution that the university could implement to the general education problem. Initially, we did not know each other very well other than being in the same class, so there was a period of socialization. This happened, for the most part, before we began recording our problem discussion. We introduced ourselves and talked about how we wanted to go about our discussion so that it would be sure to follow the five steps of the procedural model of problem-solving. …show more content…
Looking back, I realize I should have focused more of my research on solutions rather than defining the problem and researching conflicting viewpoints. I took on the role of an information seeker, in that found myself asking for clarification and more information often. I think everyone in the group took on the roles of information/opinion giver, evaluator-critic, and elaborators. We each provided facts, opinions, examples and evidence, some of which was based on personal experience that turned out to be helpful when discussing how a particular plan would work. Each of us also made an effort to judge the evidence and conclusions so that we could narrow down our solutions. I believe it was necessary for each of us to take on these roles because of the nature of the task. In P-MOPS problem-solving, the group is required to define the problem, which is essentially providing facts, and one must also voice his/her opinions and beliefs, as well as elaborate upon them. Overall, our group effectively used the P-MOPS model of problem-solving to complete our task. The only suggestion I have for my group is to keep the stage of generating and elaborating solutions separate from the stage of evaluating

The main challenge of this group situation is that there was a sudden rise of conflict among members at the beginning to mid phase of the project. This resulted the possible development of groupthink (Janis, 2008). As a leader in this situation, I would firstly feel lousy and disappointed in myself that I didn’t take note of group’s division and how the meeting could be more inclusive of everyone’s opinion (Chadha, 2016). However, at that point, I would also probably feel confused but yet curious as to why it was suddenly voiced out, hence thought that I should facilitate to explicit the thoughts and feelings of each member to better understand as well.…

Having different opinions on what the research question was to be, gave greater depth of thought into the question as each suggestion was split apart and studied, put back together to see if it measured up. This was obviously a great benefit but unfortunately, it fell to myself and another member of the team to come up with the final question. This may have been because the rest of the team became frustrated over analysing a question and worrying about the word order did not seem as crucial to them. It may have been because of myself and the other member were too dominant within the group to allow others to think, however, I feel that this was not the case as although I am a confident person the other group member, who pushed my depth of knowledge, is a quiet person. Either way, this highlights one of the issues with group work that workload is not always equally shared.…

On May 20, 2016, my adviser and I sat down to have a discussion about the university required courses and courses that was mandatory for the Liberal Arts college. English 101 was one of the classes I chose to take my first semester because I knew I had more knowledge on writing efficient papers because of my previous AP English courses in high school. In high school, I was always told that I was an adequate writer because I knew the basic of connecting ideas that provided a clear concrete understanding. However, the only time I received an unsatisfactory score was when the information I included in my paper was unorganized. Also, another reason I chose to take English my first semester instead of my second semester was because I knew I needed…

It was August 7th 2013 first day of junior year I was wearing my new Nike Elite tennis shoes, and sporting my brand new Northface backpack to go along with my fresh “back to school” haircut. We wore uniforms at my school so I had on a black polo and khaki shorts, because it was super-hot that day. It was the first school year I was able to be in the program Ross Collins, offered only for juniors and seniors at my high school. The purpose of Ross Collins career and Technical center was to help provide students for the necessary skills needed to successfully make a transition into post-secondary education or work and prepare these students to successfully compete in a global market. There were a numerous amount of fields I could study for example:…

Coming into this course, I really didn 't know what to expect. Sociology is something that I’ve always known about, but never really paid much attention to. As many people other people think, I saw sociology and psychology as the same thing. I didn 't take the time to read or understand what the difference was and even if there really was a difference. I quickly learned that there was.…

Why should a non-science major take biology, chemistry, and other physical sciences? Why is it essential that every college student study English composition? There are countless benefits to general education classes; however, many students are yet to acknowledge their importance. They put little effort into the required classes, blow off assignments, and are completely oblivious to the many skills they need in order to become well-rounded citizens. They would rather spend their time taking classes related to their major than “wasting” it in a general education course.…

As I began this class in January my definition of curriculum was based on the academic coursework teachers use to instruct the information. Now my definition of curriculum is anything that falls under the auspice of the school that includes coursework, classroom arrangement, instruction, assessment, student engagement, and community involvement. My perspective is curriculum is what students learn in and out of the school. We need to teach students to become learners and problem solvers for the 21st century. I currently work at The Academy at Penncrest High School through the Simon Youth Foundation.…

Each teacher has his or her own method of teaching. No one teacher teaches the same way as another. These methods are manifested in a teacher’s education philosophy, or “the principles that guide professional action. ”(Parkay, 2015, p.114) A teacher creates his or her philosophy by examining his/her beliefs in a variety of categories, like what a teacher’s role should be, what a student’s role should be, and what should be taught.…
