Before ENG 202, which was my first college-level English class, my general conception of “English” as an academic discipline was different. For instance, prior to this my general conception of “English” essentially revolved around reading and writing comprehension skills. In fact, in high school I spent a lot of time analyzing different forms of text like novels, poems, and photos, and then writing about them. When analyzing these texts the teacher had us focus more on theme, tone, and figurative language than anything else. Besides this there were a few times that we focused on the author’s writing style. After analyzing these texts, it was sometimes required of us to write a paper to show that we understood the text and the ideas in it.
From my experience in ENG 202 I feel that this class shifted in a different direction. While we still analyzed texts the way we did it changed. Instead of focusing on theme, tone, and figurative language like I did in high school we focused on the different critical lenses and its application in works. Furthermore, this class differed in what texts it analyzed. Incorporated into ENG 202 wasn’t just traditional text but multimedia, which you don’t necessarily witness in high school. For example, there was a combination of articles, poems, images, music lyrics, videos, and software platforms

Cultural studies focuses on questions of race, gender, and power and so using these theories a creative writing piece can be formed. In fact, one can make a song, poem, or novel inspired from one of these theories: psychoanalytic theory, feminist theory, queer theory, marxist theory, historical criticism, postcolonial and critical race theory, and reader response theory, and have their work tailored to it. Moreover, that person can also create plots and characters that portray that specific theory or a combination of

Short Term 12 was a very interesting movie. It had hints of being realistic, but with aspects where you knew it was a movie. It’s about a group of workers who work in a foster care residential facility setting. The main character, Grace, deals with her own personal struggles while she supervises the children at the facility. I have a short bit of experience at a facility like Short Term 12 in some aspects; I can see where parts of the movie are realistic and where are some are an exaggeration because it is a movie.…

Over the course of English 102, I have developed a new set of skills and learned to become a better writer. When I first came into English 102 I struggled with many different concepts of writing. During the semester in English 102, my writing became stronger because I learned how to incorporate evidence into my argument, do more thorough research, have smoother transitions, and have more organization throughout my essay. I learned how to peer review better and to take what others say and incorporate it into my essay. In the beginning, before English 102, I struggled with good organization and flow to an essay, sandwich evidence into paragraphs, and having strong arguments in persuasive essays.…

“Diving In: An Introduction to Basic Writing” by Mina Shaughnessy In this article, Shaughnessy argues that educators need to start examining their own teaching and learning processes and the complex and contextual needs of their students, instead of focusing on what students can be doing differently. She points out that basic writing students are not behind and need to “catch up” to any particular level, but there must been a more effective means of communication needs to be established between the students and teachers (291). Shaughnessy presents four stages of development as a basic writer instructor and explains how educators move through these stages before becoming competent to teach basic writing. The first stage called “Guarding the…

As I think about my experiences throughout the semester of English 101, I have realized that I have learned some very important requirements that are important to help improve my writing. “Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything (George Bernard Shaw).” During this course, reading and comprehending the materials given was not only a tough task for me but it was also demanding. I was challenged to change my thought process on what it was to be a good writer. The concept of understanding the value of correctly communicating thoughts differs from learning to apply the techniques needed to communicate successfully.…

From the Mesopotamian civilization to the present day civilization, writing has taken a place of importance in our daily lives; something I have always struggled with. Through school the most difficult subject that I have always struggled with is English. Growing up my first language was Spanish due to the fact that my parents do know much English. My parents were never able to read to me in English preventing me from hearing and seeing the English language; it was not until I entered elementary school that I was exposed to English. This has contributed to my difficulties in English courses throughout my education.…
