Communication is an important way of getting connected to patients and building a lasting relationship. Poor communication will impact the way we connect with others, start decision- making and problem solving. When we communicate with others we are able to gain a better understanding of each other, form a trusting relationship. As nurses we are always teaching our patients and explaining their treatments to them through communication however we still have poor communication in workplaces. It ranges from lack of communication to incorrect messaging or incomplete directions. Communication is essential for delivery of high quality, safe patient care. Model Case
64yr old Mr. John is about to have a colonoscopy procedure for the first time and he is very nervous and apprehensive. He has no idea what colonoscopy means. He asks the doctor “why am I getting a colonoscopy”. By listening and clarifying his concerns and fear it eases his anxiety and provides him comfort. Passing on further information about his upcoming colonoscopy procedure through transmission helped facilitate how quick he made up his mind to have the colonoscopy procedure.
Borderline Case
50yr old Mrs. Amy showed up at the clinic for her routine physical exam. She became very talkative during the exam. The provider tried to explain the findings of his exam to Mrs. Amy, but could not because she would not stop talking. The provider gave a list of new medications to Mrs. Amy and a copy of her result. While the provider tried to explain his finding with the patient she would not listen and the visit lasted for 30 minutes instead of 15 minutes due to the patient’s inability to stop talking when it was necessary so as to listen to what the provider had to …show more content…
Nurses can apply the attributes to this concept in their daily assessment as wells as in their interventions. Summary The concept analysis can be used by nurses to guide them in overcoming the challenges involved with communication and help them meet the goal of improving patient safety, quality of care and maintaining a therapeutic nurse patient relationship.
