Date and Time: Friday, February 3, 2017, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (3 hours) Task/Activity: Students in both classes were first given a spelling test covering words they were given at the beginning of the week. While I did not have permission to view the individual scores myself, it was implied that most students received a 70% or above. Following this, students reviewed the short story titled “My Furthest Back-Person.” The day before, Mrs. Lanza was absent and had the students read the story and take a multiple-choice quiz. Receiving feedback that reported that most students struggled with the quiz, they revisited both the story and the quiz together, discussing the story as well as the multiple choice questions. Although there were open-ended questions included with the assignment, Mrs. Lanza only assigned the multiple-choice question quiz. Following the completion of the quiz, students worked on independent writing assignments on MyAccess. …show more content…
Lanza played a CD that read the story aloud to the students. This helped students with their understanding by both revisiting the story again and hearing it in addition to reading along. The quiz was also made to be “open book.” Teaching Methods: In this lesson, Mrs. Lanza utilized the discussion teaching method. The discussion teaching method was used during the review of “My Furthest Back-Person,” when there was a group discussion after listening to the story. This was used in order to clarify the story as well as to help students understand the essential parts of the story. Difficulties: Students did not openly express difficulty with the spelling quiz, multiple-choice quiz, or reading assignment. However, it was determined that students struggled with understanding “My Furthest Back-Person” the previous day, which is why the story was revisited in the way it
