My Formative Years

I'm going to be honest here-- my "formative" years are what many people would call uncouth. As a child growing up constantly toeing the poverty line almost daily it's not really surprising that people would say this. I grew up in two motels near the heart of Disneyland, California. My hobbies included laughing at tourists, reading books about other more interesting places, taking pictures on my moms cell phone, watching T.V. with my sisters and brother, and moving my belongings every 21 days. We had lived in this place and had known most of these people since I was nine years old and just finishing my fourth grade year. We got kicked out of this motel three weeks before my senior year of high school. At the time I was balancing summer school,

"Success is the result of perfection, hard work, learning from failure, loyalty and persistence" I have had many ups and downs over the course of my life thus far. One specific example of this took place during my freshman year of high school. When I started high school it was very challenging for me, partially due to the fact that; during this time, I was lazy, unmotivated and did not really take school seriously. This by far is one of my biggest regrets to this day. Who would ever think that not trying during my freshman year would continue to follow me throughout the course of my academic career.…

As my application is examined, it will come to the attention that no activities or descriptions are included from my sophomore year of high school. That would be because I actually did not have a sophomore year. Advancing forward a full year in high school would have to be one of the most challenging, longest lasting, incredibly difficult circumstances that I have ever found myself in. Not only was this decision strenuous when it came to academic struggles, but I found myself facing family skirmishes, social problems, and issues with the Board at my school. Even though so many obstacles could have been avoided by choosing to take the easiest route available to me, I would not trade my experiences for anything because ultimately, they formed me into the person who I need to be in order to pursue my dreams and taught me more than I could have ever imagined learning.…

In the Spring of last year, it was my Junior year, one of the most critical years in high school. It’s the year that colleges look at the most, also it was the year that I was in some of the most challenging classes. Mostly honors, a lot of homework, and tests to go along with it. Studying would take me until late at night, and even on weekends, all day long. When it’s the end of the term everyone checks their grades for their report cards, and progress reports.…

My freshman year was one of my craziest school year. It came from fake hall passes, to skipping in the restroom, and acting all bad by getting referrals. I remember my ap secretary always used to call me “Diablo” just because i always got in trouble and she said i used to drive her crazy. I just never cared about the consequence of skipping so much, good thing I never got caught. Meeting new friends and new attitudes and a little more of responsibility and to be honest waking up so early every single morning was not that fun.…

Failure is an event no one wants to go through, but everyone has to go through to grow and prosper as an individual. My freshmen and sophomore year of high school is a time I experience failure. I look all around me, suddenly, I feel calm. This is an environment that I have come to know very well. A place where there is so much stress and so much anticipation, a place that has always seemed so extravagant. That place over the years had eventually become my home and a place where I belong. I took it all in and forgot about the pressure, the hundreds of thousands of eyes on me.…

These last four years have been a whirlwind for me. Between school, gymnastics, extra curricular activities, work, cheer, and many more activities I have to say I have been very busy throughout my high school years. There has been ups and downs, yet through all of them I have learned valuable lessons that I will take with me as I go off to college. I tried to challenge myself each year in a different way, being able to look back and reflect on them is a great way to see how far I’ve come since that first day as a freshman on crutches nervous as all get-out to attend Auburn Riverside High School. Freshman year, I started off the first month of school on crutches, and the following two months in a boot.…

When I started my sophomore year at Seattle Prep, I told myself I would do something challenging. I made a goal of finding something that is uncomfortable, and doing it. Sophomore year was the year I joined Pulse, Seattle Prep's dance team. Before Pulse, I have never danced for recreation, and I knew this would be a challenge. I could not even present a speech in front of a small class, I had no idea how I would be able to dance in front of the whole school.…
