My Daily Foodways

Exploring different cultures is an experience one cannot explain. Comparing and contrasting foodways allows the society we live in today to differentiate themselves from others. Foods that I eat on a daily basis include chicken, spinach, eggs, apples, pistachios and cereal. I eat chicken and the eggs for the protein and the low fat they provide. The spinach is a way for me to “eat my greens,” as my parents would say. Contrary to the foods I always eat, I rarely eat ice-cream, cakes, pretzels and cookies. These foods are high in sugar and do not follow my “healthy diet.” Foods I consider necessary to “make a meal” include a protein, fat and carbohydrate. For example, for my protein, I would use chicken or fish or any food with a high protein content and

My favorite home cooked meal is Chicken Parmigiana. I eat this meal at least three times a week. My family and I prepare home cooked meals almost every night. This is important for a few reasons. First, we bond over the experience. Occasionally when cooking with flour, we make a mess and throw it on each other. My mother hates cleaning it all up, but in the moment we all laugh and enjoy the time. Making our own dinners also help save money and it is a lot cheaper than going out every night. My family spends around one hundred fifty dollars per week and we get breakfast, lunch dinner and snacks for six to seven days. If my family went out it could end up costing around one hundred dollars and for only one meal. Dinner as a child was and is still the same for me now, I eat most of my meals home. I ate some meals at my friends’ houses some Friday nights, some Saturday nights at my grandmother’s, aunts and

Planned family meals provide an allotted amount of time for children to ask question and inquire about the surrounding world. This time also provides parents with an indirect way to teach their children right from wrong and give them personal insight.…

Sharing food with my family helps us learn the importance of family and cultural traditions. In my family while having dinner we are not allowed to use phones because my dad says that mealtime is family time, so we should only concentrate on eating and talking with family members. Extended family gatherings around food are part of Indian tradition. Our extended family gathering is where more than two or three families get together and make our traditional foods. As my dad says, nobody knows what tomorrow holds so spend time with the people who love you and the people you love.…

Many families are now keeping logs of what they are eating, or even “prepping”, (cooking their meals for the week on Sunday or Monday nights, and portioning them out to be nutritionally beneficial) their dinners and meals. In addition, families can focus on refraining from serving meals “family style”, (in large portions, to be passed around at the dinner table). Families are also controlling the “snacking habits” of their children. They are not allowing their children to eat anywhere other than a designated area, and are not giving children snacks as a way of rewarding them (Scaffa, 2010,…
