My Five Strengthsquest Themes

Decent Essays
Last week, I implemented an academic strategy from one of my five StrengthsQuest themes. I found that most of my themes provided academic strategies to keep me motivated in school. Undoubtedly, these strategies are helpful in advancing for the future, but I felt that these strategies would not drastically impact my studies in the course of a week. Nonetheless, I found a study technique in my Restorative Theme packet that seemed like it could make a monumental difference in the way I read class texts. This strategy is a study technique to use when reading class text; it tells one to mark different sections in the text that the reader may want to return to later. This is so the reader can progress in their readings as opposed to becoming stagnant.

In a guided self-assessment of study habits and strategies, ED 3100 students have been challenged to embark on a journey of self-exploration in an effort to better understand our own learning processes, as well as determine how different methods of studying and learning may affect our overall success. Dr. Demars (2015) explains that exploration and knowledge of our own techniques and learning strategies will then empower us, as future educators, to facilitate the same attributes in our students. She emphasizes that the better we (as teachers) understand our own learning processes, the better we can understand those of our students, and consequently help them self-assess to achieve a better understanding of their own learning. Although this exploration has raised many questions for me, there were key themes that stood out amongst others. By constructing an unbiased system of measurement, I am experimenting with deliberate and strategic changes to my study habits that are explicitly designed to address and correct weaknesses in my current study habits that I will track over a period of four weeks.…

After reading a few chapters of Strengths Quest, I was instructed to participate in the Strengths Finder assessment (Anderson, Clifton, & Schreiner, 2006). This 30 minute assessment was an interesting tool that pointed out my greatest strengths. It also provided a detailed description of what having those strengths mean and examples of how they are prominent in a person 's life. After taking the StrengthsFinder survey, I discovered that my five dominant strengths are empathy, harmony, consistency, relator, and restorative.…

Over the summer us freshman were given assignments all revolving around the book "Bamboo People" by Mitali Perkins. So, to start, I read the book. As I read, I marked every instance that these themes came up: Reading is rewarding, reading is hard, and "hard" is necessary, reading arms you against oppression, and reading develops your moral compass. Then I described on paper the quotes I found, explained their relationship to the theme, and explained why I chose them.…

The movie Precious describes the life of a 16-year-old girl who is illiterate, lives in an abusive home, was raped by her father, and thus has one disabled child and is pregnant with her second. Although Precious was in a horrible situation, with the help of her social worker and her alternative school teacher, Precious escaped from her house and started a new life of her own. As a social work student, I can learn from Precious’s situation by comparing how the social worker in the movie helped Precious versus how I would have, had I been her social worker. By identifying the primary systems that affect Precious, some of her greatest strengths that helped her in overcoming her situation, and four interventions I would have implemented, I can…

Research shows most of what we learn and know about our basic studies come from reading informational texts. Strengthening the student toolbox by Dunlosky describes multiple strategies that students can use to learn certain amounts of information that the students have to know in a class and in turn strategies on how teachers can teach their students. These strategies were as follows for students and teachers being the good; practice testing, disturbed practice, interleaved practice, elaborative interrogation, self-explanation, and the bad; rereading, highlighting, summarization, keyword mnemonic and imagery for text. All of these strategies are and can be used by students and helped or hindered along by their teachers, some more than others. In my high school years I received multiple instructions to not cram study for a test and to space out studying for it in the days leading up to the test.…

My personal leadership style is situational as I feel it is the most appropriate to my role as a Regional Education Specialist within a team. My role is not to manage, although I sometimes manage situations with various team members. My role is more of senior leadership on a local team so that I provide more direction, coaching, support and delegation to tasks based on individual team members’ skills and abilities as well as the situation at hand. Based on my own profile results, overall, I am mostly perceived as providing coaching and support to help teammates achieve their goals or identify areas to succeed where they are currently struggling or failing to achieve.…

Literary theory consists of various principles, beliefs and underlying ideas that are used to understand and analyze different pieces of texts in literature. An interesting way to view literary theory is by considering theories as tools. Critics take these tool and apply it to a text in an attempt to look at it from a different perspective. It grants them the ability to examine a particular aspect of a text, which they regard of significant importance. When these theories are passed onto readers, it allows them to observe texts in a different manner and to challenge the content before them.…
