In the beginning of the eight-week course I was positive that this class would be simple, as I’ve written several papers in previous classes. However, I was sadly mistaken. Most of the fundamentals that are required for successful writing are somewhat overlooked in other classes requiring essays or research papers; basing the grade primarily on the content and meat of the paper versus the actual details of the paper. Furthermore, I’ve never received as many deductions on any assignment as I’ve experienced in this “First Year Writing” class. However, with persistence, attention to detail, and performing the readings and instructions provided I feel that I’ve successfully improved since the first paper. This portfolio illustrates my growth …show more content…
I struggled with this assignment. It was difficult to determine exactly how to structure the paper to accurately develop my argument and effectively get the message across to the audience. One of my common writing errors is organization and structure. Nevertheless, the instructor feedback for this essay included overall organization concerns and the use of quotes. This was not surprising, but I did feel that I accurately provided a persuasive …show more content…

I enjoyed this assignment and felt passionate about the message. However, regardless of the interesting information that was provided I failed to correctly restate my initial claims in the conclusion. Throughout this course, I would be critiqued on areas of writing, but always ensure that it wouldn’t be a reoccurring issue. I feel that is where my growth in writing lies; refusing to make the same mistake twice. There are several issues with each paper, but never the same

The purpose of my writing project was to educate my audience on what rhetorical analysis is, how it is used in our daily lives, and how having a greater understanding of it makes for better writing. My audience for the project consisted of undergraduate college students like myself, specifically first-years, who use the website Writingspaces.org, to enhance their writing ability. I felt that the best part of my paper was my rhetorical analysis of Apple. It acts as a great example of how to break down an advertisement for a company whose products are sought after by most college-aged students. Two aspects of this project I struggled with most were, the organization of my paragraphs and maintaining the genre of a Writingspaces.org article.…

One of the most important thing I have learned in this course that has positively affected my confidence in my writing skills is the concept of writing a “shitty first draft”. In my midterm self-assessment, I discussed how I thought I was among one of the unlucky ones that was not blessed with natural writing skills. However, through class discussions, I’ve learned that one of the most important competent of professional writing is the need for constant revision. Contrary to popular believe, writing does not come easy to anyone. In order to successfully produce professional writing, it is important that one plan, draft, revise, and edit his or her work.…

Before beginning this course, I knew that I lacked confidence within my writing. People say that you are your own worst critique, and I fully agree with that statement. My writing was not terrible in some aspects, but I knew that it needed to be improved upon. I lacked the experience needed because writing was not something that I did on a daily basis. When I first started English 1302, the little confidence that I had significantly plummeted since my writing seemed childish compared to other students.…

Organization is an integral part of writing an essay. Without organization, ideas will be jumbled and the argument will be unclear. At the beginning of the semester, I viewed myself as a creative writer. I have learned that it is very important to be aware of my strengths and weaknesses in my writing. Taking this class has helped me understand the strengths and weaknesses in my writing skills, and it has given me the opportunity to strengthen the areas in which I was weak. An example of this is that I have become aware of my grammar and spelling errors as the semester progressed.…
