What I Learned In English Class

Through my first year of the college experience I have learned a lot of very different things, having to do with the so called “adult world”. I have found many of these new facts interesting but not very relevant to school. What I did learn this year was many things about school itself, as well as how different it is in comparison to high school. Though I am not a fan of writing or am I a fan of English classes due to the large amount of given, and usually mandatory, writing assignments. I am glad I did take this English class during my first year due to the helpful skill I was able to learn. I do feel that I have learned skills in English 5A and B that I will be able to use later on throughout my college experience in writing, not taking, and understanding a text in general. …show more content…
This is a process in which you read though a text, break the text down in to sections, then summarize, pick a quote, and explain your opinion or personal preference on the section. I have found this extremely helpful because it helps to breakdown and better understand the essay to deeper analyze it and break down the individual arguments within the different sections of the text. This becomes a very helpful tool when writing paper, due to not having to go back through the entire text to find the one quote or argument that you need. I have used Triple Entry Journals without even realizing it before while writing papers just going back to look for good quotes I find myself looking at Triple Entry Journals. For the past year, I could only provide an indefinite answer to a frequently asked question, How was your freshman year? In fact, those of us who experienced our freshman year could be addressed as “college veterans” will never initiate a conversation with regard to the past year. Perhaps they consider that the freshman year was not as consummate as they initially planned. I cannot judge my first year in college was successful or frustrating, but I feel I benefited from the meritorious experiences and practical knowledge gained from my college life. In my opinion, no matter what goals one wishes to achieve in college, whether its grade, love, health, or sense of accomplishment, one has to be prepared for both failures and…

Before this course, I did not know grammar well, and what I did know I did not fully understand. Yet, due to taking the course, I learned more about the structure of the English language, and can use grammar better than I did before. For instance, the first three major assignments were filled with missing comas, verb-tense misuses, and run-on sentences. Now, I may still make mistakes, but I know why I have made them. In other English courses, I had grammar homework and reading assignments that, often, seemed to be busy work, but with this course, I did not think that was the case.…

I’m often caught up in impromptu debates with those around me. Perhaps I come off as pedantic, but most of my eagerness stems from my desire to share what I learn. I am still surprised by just how vast human knowledge is and even more surprised by just how lacking it is. New arguments and evidence are constantly being developed. I know that this behavior leads to my characterization as a nerd, and in many ways, I do fit that stereotype.…

Before the class, I did not know a correct form of email very clear, I sent few emails to my professors before. My first semester of college has been an intersting learning experience. It has been full of ups and downs. I’ve learned a lot since being in college, mostly how to take charge of my life and get my priorities straight. I learned that being successful in college depends on how you prioritize your work and how serious you take it. As a teenager I imagined that reading and writing fell into place without any issues for a few individuals, I did not believe I could actually learn how to read and write good. Pretty much as a few students would be okay in math and terrible in english or great in a few subjects and awful in a few. I had this believe that English classes was not where I belonged. On account of the gradings framework in Africa you could come up short a subject and still get elevated to the following class cause the evaluations are computed as the average score of all subject. In english classes I stayed at the back and hoped the teacher never notices me, I avoided reading passage, it was worst to the point that I kept away from literature classes where we were all appointed diverse characters from a book to read.…

This school year I enjoyed this English class because it was not very difficult, but it was not easy at all. This year we did so many assignments and some of them were analyzing poems, emulating poems, writing a theme of a poem, presenting a speech in class and then working as a group to create a chapter. I believe that I have grown throughout this school year. I have grown as a listener because back then I was not used to listening to poems without having a paper right in front of me.…
