EDL 652 - Natalie Priester

Natalie Priester
Beginning next month, I will begin my twelfth year of teaching but my first year teaching English 7 at Pinacate Middle School in Perris Union High School District (PUHSD). I chose to relocate and join the staff at PUHSD because they have a strong commitment to technology which is named Scholar+, strong leadership, and diverse student and teacher demographics (and it doesn 't hurt that my boyfriend is a teacher there and it is twenty minutes from our new house). Aside from teaching, I am heavily involved in the edtech community. I present for EdTechTeam GAFE Summits, CUE Tech Fairs, CUE Rockstar Camps, and maintain a strong circle of friends/personal learning network (PLN) of

Before joining this program, I planned to be a teacher-leader for the duration of my career. However, when my district 's leadership made a series of decisions that alienated the partners/stakeholders on my campus, decreased our enrollment, and dismantled our behavior plan, I decided that I needed to at least learn more in order to support my students. Around the time this program began, one of my mentors kindly nudged me into presenting at a summit. Over the past year, I have combined the knowledge and skills gained by these experiences to realize that I actually want to continue to learn to help students and teachers at my school, across Southern California, the country, and …show more content…
"Movin ' Right Along" by The Muppets represents and inspires me. The first verse sings,
Movin ' right along in search of good times and good news,
With good friends you can 't lose,
This could become a habit
Opportunity knocks once let 's reach out and grab it (yeah)
Together we 'll nab it
I know that my role as an educational leader is completely connected to my friends/PLN. We learn together, teach together, and just play together. People are the highlight of every conference, edcamp, or class I attend. I value hearing others ' experiences, sharing ideas when appropriate, receiving feedback, and engaging in deep conversations about the future of education, so much that I have begun to integrate opportunities for these conversations into my sessions. These conversations often lead to collaboration and ongoing mutual support, which is also highlighted in the song,
Getting there is half the fun, come share it with me
Movin ' right along
We 'll learn to share the load
We don’t need a map to keep this show on the road
I am very proud and grateful that I am part of a network of educators working together to improved

Additionally, the long lasting success of the program and the school district’s acceptance of the program stands as a testament of the success and strong approval of the program within its schools. I appreciate the program’s ideology of coming together as a community interested in the success of students. The system enables community mentors who are privileged to extend their powers to mentees. I personally appreciate how the program emphasizes to the mentors in training that the program does not expect these adults to radically change the lives of the mentees but to simply ensure they have the same capacity to succeed in life by providing them support. With this comment, Ms. Shilton attempts to eliminate potential savior complexes present in the minds of misguided mentors, and enlightens them to understand the great potential of mentorship on its own, a major step towards active citizenship.…

Just last year I was driving up to LHU for the Summer Bridge program and I remember being extremely nervous because I didn’t know what to expect. I remember being assigned to a “Peer Mentor” whose job was to guide me throughout my freshman year and push me to be my best. I remember going to every workshop that was held on Thursdays at 12:30 p.m. because I knew if I didn’t there may be a possibility that I could miss out on some important information that would one day be helpful. I remember going to Dr. Gainer’s office every time I had a paper to write because I knew how helpful she was. I remember seeing other students in my class stress out and/or make mistakes that they would not have made if they were in SSS.…

I decided that I would take leadership roles throughout high school in order to help serve the less fortunate. KEY Club, a service and fundraising club, became my focus, and I travelled up the ranks to become the school’s external affairs manager and the service committee chair of the Eastern Canada District. As I introduced more extra-curricular activities into my life, organization became more important -- and I was shocked to see how much it helped me save…

8th Grade Graduation As we sit here today, eagerly waiting to graduate, let’s ask ourselves one simple question. Where would we all have been without teachers today? It’s not just teachers though, it’s the friends we made; the experiences and knowledge that we all gained throughout elementary and middle school too. Even though we are all graduating middle school today, I think I can speak on behalf of my classmates when saying that we all learned so much already.…

As I move forward in my career as an educational leader, my aspiration is to emulate the characteristics of a successful leader. Success in education can be measured every day in every school when the beliefs of the leader are reflected in the students and the staff. I aspire to be an innovative leader that motivates people to be courageous and open-minded to tackle the hard tasks. Furthermore, I hope to be a transformative leader that becomes a role-model to their peers by doing rather than saying. I will become this leader by being consistent with my communication skills, making responsible decisions that display my integrity and always keeping in mind that student achievement is my number one purpose.…

My leadership philosophy is one that is rooted in the strong belief that it must be a continuous quest to motivate all students to become critical thinkers, effective communicators, and lifelong learners, while possessing outstanding character. This includes assisting students with discovering their talents and interests, therefore developing a love of learning, while developing into ethical, productive citizens. Accomplishing this requires a leader who is knowledgeable in pedagogy and curriculum, including the use of data and current assessments to enhance instruction, and who possesses outstanding communication skills, the ability to manage an operation’s resources effectively, promotes collaboration and teamwork, and is passionate and committed to helping students learn. I believe that my interpersonal skills will be my biggest strength as an educational leader. Through frequent, honest communication, and my enthusiasm for the subject, I will demonstrate understanding and compassion for those around me, therefore building trusting relationships.…
