How Chamorra Changed My Life

Improved Essays
The first 12 years of my life I avoided reading or writing because I associated it with school work and if there was one thing I avoided at all cost it was that. My first year and a half of school was on a tiny island named Guam and the school was probably far, far below any standards back then. The teachers could spank the children in front of the class and my teacher in particular chose a whale bone as the weapon of choice. I think one of the hardest things was that we were not taught in English all the time, my teacher favored speaking in Chamorro more often than not. Still to this day I can still speak a bit of Chamorro but it was very confusing for me back then because at home my parents only spoke English. Over half way through my …show more content…
I went from never reading a book because I thought it was work to suddenly reading a book or two a week. In class we had to write a short story about Sinbad the sailor and his eighth voyage, I ended up writing 11 typed pages because I was really enjoying it. I discovered that year if it was something I enjoyed I could really write, granted it wasn 't the most amazing story or anything but I had fun with it. Unfortunately for me we moved again that summer and was in a whole new country and I had to start over making friends once again. I have to say that for me back then was if I felt secure with having a few friends and comfortable at school, my school work reflected that but when I was uncomfortable I really didn 't have an interest in school.

Thankfully I didn 't stop reading, I continued to read up to 4 or 5 books a week sometimes. I do understand reading is not the same as writing but through reading my vocabulary grew as well as my knowledge. I no longer feared writing book reports or doing research papers but I only put my full effort into it if it was something that captured my interest. Over my teenage years I would dream of someday becoming a writer and being famous though I still really didn 't write a lot of anything because I was way more interested in

Growing up as a child I totally despised books, I hated reading all together. I did not did not enjoy reading alone and I surely did not appreciate reading in class. It was not that I was incapable of reading, in fact I always scored exceptionally well on all reading segments of standardized tests, I just really did not see a requirement for it. Throughout my middle school years the english department required all students to read a specific number of books every month, so there was no chance to get of staying away from it. In the end I would be acquainted with Percy Jackson, and The Lighting Thief , a book series that would soon change how I felt about reading all together.…

Having been homeschooled for the first twelve years of my life, I had a rather untraditional childhood. While my friends were required to go to school from 6:20 in the morning to 3:30 in the afternoon, I was at home studying or on a field trip to some relevant lecture, the library, or a museum. Because of this less rigid environment, I usually had a lot of time available to me in addition to my school time. Using this excess time for my own personal interests, I developed a penchant for reading at an early age.…

I always read as a kid. I was the small boy who plowed through books day and night, my mom scrambling to and from the library just to keep up with me. 1) Throughout the school year I believe that I wasn't as successful as I could have been in reading and reviewing a lot of books because I didn't read at home. Although this requirement did push me to find books that after reading I enjoyed alot. For example if it wasn't for the requirement to read I wouldn't have read one of my new favorite book series Rot & Ruin by Jonathan Maberry. I recently finished the second book in the Rot & Ruin series called Dust & Decay. I enjoyed reading this book a lot, a few times throughout the book I was nearly brought to tears because it was so impacting and emotional.…

We - as civilization - are shaped by our interactions with people. Some people have an engaged personality; generally bold or active. Other people tend to have a shy or introverted personality, preferring to be engaged in a small group of friends and stray from large groups. I am both partially introverted and extroverted, but prefer the latter. Reading is such a major part of my life; from the time I could comprehend the written word, I had always turned towards book.…

I used to hate reading, it didn’t matter what book it was. Fiction, Non-fiction, Biography, Autobiography, none of it interested me at all. I also don’t have a good attention span, so if I didn’t like a book in the beginning my ears would shut off. I would stop listening to it, or I would stop remembering what I had just read. Until my freshman year, I wanted to do good in high school because high school is when grades start to matter.…

Ironically, though I wasn’t immediately taken with reading, I became an avid reader after those first few difficult years. I was a regular at my elementary school’s small library, and I competed in everything book-related that I could. Battle of the books, spelling bees, and English classes were my favorite pastimes in grade school. Other children dreaded completing summer reading and literature studies, but I looked at reading…

Was there ever a time you didn’t like to do something, but as you got older you started to love it more than you did as a child? When I was younger, I never liked to read, but now as I have gotten older, I read more and more different kinds of books and novels. My mother put my sister and me into a reading program in elementary school because our reading levels were lower than they should be. There were no criteria so we read books that were interesting to us, like the Given Tree by Shel Silverstein and Charlotte’s Web by E. B. White. When we finished reading them we would go around and talk about the book we read.…

In seventh grade, my reading experience went farther downhill. The teacher expected us to do projects reflecting over what we had read every time we finished a book, with a minimum of five per trimester. I hated doing these reflection projects, so my quantity of reading fell further to just five books every three months. However, the final nail in the coffin of my reading came in eighth grade. On the first day of school, the teacher informed us that the only genre we would be allowed to read for out reading logs, which were unnecessarily complicated, was nonfiction.…
