Being the first from my family and also my mother’s side of the family to go to college has been the greatest accomplishment of my life, and coming here to SMU is such a privilege which will surely be beneficial to my future. Although my first year of college has not been ideal, I have been able to meet many great people and have enjoyed every step of the way; a lot which I owe CHAS to. Truthfully speaking, during my first semester at SMU I didn’t interact with as many people as I would have liked to. Coming from a high school whose student body was composed of 86% minorities and having gone to minority populated schools my entire life, I really didn’t know how to interact with most of the people at SMU.

Recently I submitted a housing petition to RLSH in order to stay off-campus next year; however, it’s not guaranteed I will be allowed to do this. During my first year of school, my family and I have struggled a lot in order to be able to pay for my room and board. Having to put every penny I make at my job towards paying for room and board, and having gotten a loan already, ideally I wont have to stay on campus next year. However, if my petition is rejected I will have to face these struggles once again; with the help of this scholarship not only will I be able to lift weight off my parents’ shoulders, but I will be able to work less and put more time towards my academics and becoming more involved on campus. If I am able to stay off-campus next year, I would use this scholarship towards paying for books, supplies, and to afford to attend an alternative break next school year. I can assure that I will make the most out of any help; thank you so much for your consideration of my
