My First Year I Have Played Basketball Essay

Throughout my entire life, I have played basketball. Thinking back on it today, this is basically my first year I haven’t played basketball. Although I know this sport like I know how to tie my shoes, I’ve never really thought of it in any other way besides an activity that I love. My many years of playing influenced my decision to use this topic for my assignment, but also the big impact it had throughout the rest of my family.
My grandpa had coached college basketball, and my mom played throughout her high school career. Basically, I wasn’t really given a choice. I’m not saying I wasn’t grateful for the sport at all; in the long run, I really loved it. My dad, on the other hand, was a hockey player. Although he yelled “Yeah Lyd! Score a goal,” which was Lexis used for hockey—NOT basketball, he truly loved watching me play. After thoroughly studying the different aspects of the game, speaking to my teammates and coaches, and doing a bit of research, I came to a conclusion.
According to John Swales, “A discourse community has a broadly agreed set of common public goals (p. 220, Writing about Writing).” In the basketball community, the team together has a common goal almost anyone has as a sports team; win. Each year, our goal as a team was different. My coach didn’t believe in having one single goal and that’s it, he wanted to complete a new goal each year.
