My First Trip To El Salvador Essay

Decent Essays
My first visit to El Salvador was five years ago, I was 14 then, and that was my first trip outside of the country. Although both of my parents are from El Salvador and they shared countless amazing stories of their childhood, my experience in their homeland was not as I imagined. Coming from a country where technology revolves around my daily life, it was not easy adapting to the change of no internet access. My spanish was not great at all, so socializing with other kids was challenging. The food I was raised with did not taste the same. I experienced cultural shock when I was bored, and all I wanted to do was go home. The way I coped with the situation then was counting the days for a delicious Barney’s Baja Burger. Founded on December 5, 1492 by Christopher Columbus, the island of Hispaniola was originally inhabited by the Taíno Arawak people. Ayiti, which means “mountainous land,” is a name used by its early inhabitants; the Taino-Arawak people, who also called it Bohio, which denotes “rich villages,” and Quisqueya, which signifies “high land.” The said Taínos were South American Arawaks, with Taíno meaning “the good” or “noble” in their language. Many of the Taíno-Arawak people are extinct but, there are a few survivors that are mixed with African slaves and European conquerors. Columbus on the other hand had to leave 39 of his men being that they settled in La Navidad; because he left his men, enslavement became such an issue since the treatment of…

In the 19 years I have been alive, I have lived in three states, five towns, eight houses, and now, two countries. Right before I finished high school my parents decided to move to Guatemala. I welcomed the change because I had been visiting Guatemala every summer since I was 15, and my heart always seemed at peace there. The closest I perpetually felt at home was when I lived in Guatemala, though I resided there for a short time. Every day greeted me with words rolling off my tongue I previously did not know, the taste of delicious and unique foods, and a breathtaking landscape, complete with the view of an active volcano outside of my bedroom window.…

In Costa Rica, I was a foreigner for the first time in my life, and I learned that it is scary to be an outsider. I knew a limited amount of Spanish so I felt overwhelmed when I had to speak to any of the natives. I gained empathy for everyone who has the courage to visit another country. I learned that it is really important to find locals who are helpful and kind, since it is super easy to get lost in a foreign country, especially when you can’t read any of the signs. It felt empowering to be able to find my way through a country that was completely new to me.…

“I don’t want to go back to El Salvador, I felt afraid as a women there more than in any other country in Latin America.” This is how the author begins her article. We can already tell that she is not a fan of El Salvador, and after hearing what she had to say, I’m not either. At the airport she was picked up by a taxi driver, who shared with her his opinion on girls. I have experienced much grace through the trouble and poverty I have witnessed through my mission trips to Guatemala. I went to Guatemala June 9-16, 2014, and August 4-11, 2015 (and I plan on going back August 2016). Seeing the conditions these people live in daily, has helped me take to heart the kind of help they are in need of. Many of these people have no home, no family or no money to provide for their family, yet they are still thankful. Most of the time little boys and girls won’t have any shoes on their feet or their clothes will be far too small.…
