I recently realized that my family was missing something, so I decided it was time to add a new member to my family. Her name is Sadie, she is a six-month old border collie and I can’t imagine my life without her. She is my best friend, which makes disciplining her difficult and it is safe to say that training her has also been a challenge. However, I have learned some tricks that have been very helpful with the process and I am excited to share them with you. Commands such, as “sit”, “come” or “stay” can be difficult to teach puppies to obey if you have never done so before. Having trained two dogs, I have realized that it is important to train puppies as soon as they are brought home because the longer you wait, the harder it will be. As your puppy ages it becomes more difficult for them to retain even the most basic training commands. Keep in mind that these steps have been created to aid in a longer training process. Training a puppy will not happen overnight. It is important to repeat these steps multiple times on a daily basis so puppies can learn to retain and obey these commands. I have learned that establishing an alpha or dominant figure is essential in the puppy training process. There can only be one alpha or dominant in a household. If there is a household with more than one person, it is important to decide which individual will be completing most of the training process. Keep in mind that puppies will learn to obey his/her alpha first. In time, puppies will learn to obey commands given by several different people. The household’s alpha needs to be able to establish authority and have time to dedicate to thorough puppy
