Reflective Essay On Dr. Ferrier's Psychology Of Child Development

I completed my first teaching experience on Thursday, September 29, 2016. After much consideration on the course options, I settled on Dr. Ferrier’s Psychology of Child Development (PSY 2210) course. This class meets twice a week, so the class period was 1 hour and 15 minutes, and is located in Fletcher Hall, room 100. I strategically chose child development for my first teaching experience because I thought it was important to feel fairly comfortable with the material, especially knowing how nervous I would be. I took three developmental courses during my undergraduate career, and have two children of my own, so this course seemed like a great fit. I was able to incorporate some of the strategies we’ve learned in Teaching of Psychology so …show more content…
into my lecture because I thought the students would enjoy it. To begin, I created a survey of five questions to test if students read the chapter (most hadn’t). These questions were based on the core concepts I would be covering in my lecture, and would later be tested (in addition to other materials presented in lecture) in two rounds of competitive Kahoot! quizzes, which were done at the very end of class. I like the idea of incorporating technology, especially students’ cell phones, because they are so attached to them. At the very least, if they were participating in the survey and quizzes, they wouldn’t be texting or on social …show more content…
A couple of students were already in the classroom studying, and I was able to chat with them while I was getting prepared. Although this helped to calm my nerves a little, it did not protect me from the intense wave of anxiety that filled me in the minutes leading up to the start of class. Despite the fact that I had taught a few class periods previously (PSY 2020L), I felt like I had never taught before! I think a combination of the fact that I was videotaping myself, in addition to wanting to do well, really exacerbated my anxiety. I believe that starting out with a Kahoot! survey helped me because the class was focused on the game, rather than directly on me. That feeling proved to be temporary though as I experienced an additional wave of panic when I began the lecture portion. Fortunately, this didn’t last too long as I loosened up and delved into the material. The students started out the lecture staring blankly at me, however after I got into a flow (and we watched a few cute videos), they became

Right now, I do ask questions, but they are usually returned with one-word responses. I believe that right now I am still very nervous, but I think if I write questions down before class I can use them and build off of them to make my students think more. I know that there are areas I need to work on but I do believe I can use this first lesson as a building block to better my skills as a…

Like so many, I felt an undeniable call to action after watching Davis Guggenheim’s film Waiting for Superman. The film poignantly illustrates the imperative need for a long overdue paradigm shift in American education. In the film, activist, educator and founder of the Harlem Children’s Zone, Geoffrey Canada, shares the disillusionment he felt as a child upon realizing that Superman was not coming to save him from the perils of his impoverished South Bronx neighborhood. His message in the film is that we must become our own superheroes.…

This experiment served not only to show the effectiveness of the iPod, and other electronic devices, as learning supplements in an education environment, but also inadvertently showed off the ingenuity of students when not confined to the rigidity of standardized education. Davidson writes, “The real treasure trove was to be found in the students’ innovations. Working together, and often alongside their profs, they came up with…

My zeal for undertaking the Modular Master’s Degree program at Arcadia University is to develop my skills and expand my knowledge of educating children in preparation for a career as an educator. My interest in teaching began four years ago after completing my undergraduate degree in Public Health and has since developed after my first motherhood experience. My commitment to pursuing a career as an educator was established during my maternity leave, where I had time to reflect on going back to school. I was mostly inspired by my family’s ardor for education and by the encouragement of the executive director at my job who wishes to mentor me into the leadership world of Early Childhood…

Over this past spring semester, I have obtained a total of 75 hours of field experience in the CCC Childcare UPK 1 classroom. My overall impression of the experience is that it truly exposed me to what it’s like caring for and teaching young children, and all the responsibility that accompanies it. I truly enjoyed my time in the UPK 1 classroom and after being there six hours a week, sometimes more, I feel a genuine connection to these children and the classroom. This entire experience taught me a lot, not only about early childhood education, but about myself and what I’m capable of. Working with four and five year olds opened my eyes to a way thinking that I had lost.…

Another concept seen in the movie is Erikson’s theory of psychological development. This theory suggests that development is psychosocial and occurs throughout the lifespan. It has eight stages: infancy, early childhood, play age, school age, adolescence, young adult, adulthood, and maturity and states that motivation is driven by a desire to connect with others socially (Stott, 2017). Erikson also focused on psychological crises, or an internal conflict of each stage that must be overcome to move forward in development. As mentioned above, the individuals in The Sandlot are around the ages of ten to eleven years old which are categorized in the “school age” of Erikson’s life stages.…

Plagiarism is more than just academic, legal, political, and social debate. Saha states that people rely on “copy and paste” when it comes down to plagiarizing and being lazy in this society(2377).…

This heartfelt experience brought me to the realization that I need to focus on the psychological aspects of learning and behavior in order to make the impact that I truly desire. This very special child elicited a life-changing experience, which turned my focus from classroom teaching to enacting change in different ways. Seeing children struggle to no avail is the reason I am choosing to pursue a career in educational/school psychology, working collaboratively with classroom teachers, support staff, and families to provide essential support to maximize the success of all students. By helping these children get the appropriate support they need to prosper, I will work tirelessly to provide them with an opportunity for a rewarding…

There are five major perspectives on child development: psychoanalytic, behavioral, cognitive, context, and evolutionary. Psychoanalytic perspective is the theory of personality developed by Freud that focuses on repression and unconscious forces and includes the concepts of infantile sexuality, resistance, transference, and division of the psyche into the Id, ego, and superego. Freud was also the first one who believed that all human beings were born with the desire towards hunger, sex and aggression. The Id is present at birth at represents unconscious desires, the ego is conscious and balances the needs of the id with societal demands, and the superego is the moral guide. Freud broke this development up into five stages.…
