I was at Briar Glen Elementary in Glen Ellyn, Illinois and it was recess, it was a dim, sunny day and I was in the wet grass soccer field with a bunch of noisy kids with me. We didn’t set up teams so I didn’t know who was on my team unless someone yelled for the ball. In the middle of the game I had the ball when a tall cacaigen kid was sprinting right towards me, you could hear the wet grass under his feet slur, and see the sweat dripping from his face. As he was running, he was giving me a serious mean face and I panicked and

Stewart, the other was tall and a short haired brunette named Ms. Winkle. Mrs. Stewart said to get a drink of water and Ms. Winkle said I should walk off and clean up my knee when it was bleeding red on the top part. They watched me when I fell on the thick, dirty soccer ball. They watched me wrestle my way to them, struggling to get up, but they didn’t get up from the wooden bench. They didn’t ask if I was okay just said to get some water. They didn’t ask if I needed a big band-aid for my bloody knee they just said to walk it off and to keep it clean. I walked towards the school with my head hanging low, covering my red eyes, limping with my leg sliding across the damp basketball court to the water fountain. I’m blanch in pain cleaning off my knee with my back stiffened to keep me from pouring even more. If I don’t express myself then know one would know the difficulties I go

Light At the End of the Tunnel Although Jeannette Walls and I share a common thread of being hospitalized at a young age, it is my belief after reading The Glass Castle that Jeannette had it far worse than I ever did. In The Glass Castle, Jeannette shares how she spent over a month in a hospital due to burns after she tried to make herself hot dogs. The time that Jeannette spent in the hospital was like a vacation from her crazy life and parents. She relished the time in the hospital because it was the first time in her life that she was taken care of and had people that were actually concerned about her well-being.…

From the time I was six years old, soccer consumed my life. I started at a recreational level, advanced to a competitive division, and eventually on to high school. I’ve put countless hours into learning the game. I never thought my soccer career would include coaching until one summer when two friends and I signed up to coach a recreational soccer team of nine year-old girls. Initially, I thought it would be a cakewalk, my previous coaches managed my teammates and I with ease.…

I was born with Bladder Exstrophy, a rare birth defect that occurs in 1 out of 50,000 live births, where the bladder and associated structures are improperly formed. Throughout my childhood I’ve had fourteen surgeries to make my life as “normal” as possible. To manage my condition, it requires different techniques just to empty my bladder and prevent serious infections. For example, I’ve had to visit the nurse’s office every two hours to cath myself, as far back as kindergarten. Since birth, I’ve both worn diapers or pull-ups and dealt with constantly being teased.…

When many people think of ways to describe me they think of a determined, straight face, hard working soccer player because many people see that when they come to watch me on the soccer field. However, off the field, people are often shocked and relieved to see that I am completely the opposite of the person they see on the field. Surprising to most people, off the field, when I’m not directing players, winning tackles, and connecting passes, you will often times see me with friends and family laughing and joking around, having a good time with each other. This may be a surprise to the people who only see the soccer side of me, but to people who know me well, it is just what they would expect.…
