The Freshman Experience
As my first semester abruptly comes to a screeching halt, I am blown away in disbelief. Walking across the stage and graduating high school less than six months ago, I just don’t understand how time could have gone by as fast as it has. I had no idea what I was going to do with my life after high school, let alone, how to be a college student. I was lucky enough to know where I was going to school but was really confused on what to do when I actually made it to my dream school. My first semester at Troy University taught me just as many lessons as I learned in all of my years as a high school student from working hard, investing in yourself, and truly cherishing these upcoming years at Troy University.
My first semester was a year of firsts, from living in a new area, new home, and experiencing my first week of finals. There were moments that I felt on top of the world such as making almost perfect grades on tests or meeting some of the most extraordinary people. Not every moment was perfect though, some experiences were really unfortunate such as doing poorly on my first paper in college or watching my bank account dwindle down. Though the events were not the best, I learned to cherish them because it taught me a lesson that I refused to repeat. Thus far, college has put an emphasis on myself investment. There are a select handful of students that attend school for very little amount of money while the majority of students have to spend their own money and face the dreaded debt that is

Being involved around the university is vital to be successful, not only as a student but as a future professional. If I could take anything from this first semester, as I reflect, when you get involved in school and stay busy, you tend to do great things and achieve more than you might have previously

"Success is the result of perfection, hard work, learning from failure, loyalty and persistence" I have had many ups and downs over the course of my life thus far. One specific example of this took place during my freshman year of high school. When I started high school it was very challenging for me, partially due to the fact that; during this time, I was lazy, unmotivated and did not really take school seriously. This by far is one of my biggest regrets to this day. Who would ever think that not trying during my freshman year would continue to follow me throughout the course of my academic career.…

My years in high school were quite thrilling and adventurous. Starting as a freshman, I had no idea where I was going and what was going to be expected of me. Over the years I became involved with extracurricular activities which led to my primary interest I had developed in technology and the sciences. For the past year, I could only provide an indefinite answer to a frequently asked question, How was your freshman year? In fact, those of us who experienced our freshman year could be addressed as “college veterans” will never initiate a conversation with regard to the past year. Perhaps they consider that the freshman year was not as consummate as they initially planned. I cannot judge my first year in college was successful or frustrating, but I feel I benefited from the meritorious experiences and practical knowledge gained from my college life. In my opinion, no matter what goals one wishes to achieve in college, whether its grade, love, health, or sense of accomplishment, one has to be prepared for both failures and…

In high school my most outstanding example of a time when I set an example as a student leader was my sophomore year in high school. My sophomore year of high school I was brought up to the varsity soccer team, the team that I was on was not extremely hard working and or dedicated. As a sophomore I was afraid to stand up and verbally tell the entire team that we need to step it up, or we are going to have a horrible season, so I decided to make my statement apparent by my actions. First, I started by always being the first one to every practice, putting pressure on my other teammates to do the same, in result everyone started to arrive to practice earlier. The second step I took was difficult since I was one of the youngest players and the…

The day of August 27, 2012 I was officially titled a freshman. One look down those unknown red and blue walls, will forever change my perspective of high school. There was an instant moment of disbelief in my freshman, I was terrified, and no thought came to mind as to how I was going to survive high school for the next four years. Of course I knew it'll be different from my tiny middle school, but will it be like the cliché movies about the upcoming of age, or resemble the happiest times of life. From that first day, I knew I wasn’t like everyone else.…

High school changes people. They express themselves, become opinionated, and they start to look at the world differently as they experience things they have never encountered before. A wise Oliver Wendell Holmes said, “Man’s mind stretched to a new idea never goes back to its original dimensions.” This quote is an excellent way to describe my experience in high school.…

College is a time of new experiences filled with new interests, new relationships, and many emotions. There have been theories made by several researchers that explain what college students go through and how they are affected by the sudden, exciting and [something] new environment that is college. It is a time of independence, but also of so much more. Arthur W. Chickering is one of these researchers that came up with a theory about the development that college students go through. This is called Chickering’s Seven Vectors of College Student Development, and I will discuss how the collegiate experience of Bryce Tham, a junior here at the University of California, Irvine, applies to this theory, as well as how his experiences will affect what…

The end of the day comes whether you have gotten up to do something productive or if you have simply remained inanimate while time moves around you. I have found that the present slips away while you are worrying about the future. We are constantly telling ourselves that if we just get through this, then everything after will be better. We forget to appreciate the moment while constantly reaching for a hypothetically more fulfilling life. Once we graduate high school, or get through a challenging class, or finish a workout, everything after will get easier.…
