Residential Assistant Reflection

Great Essays
My first semester as a Residential Assistant has been an overall interesting, challenging, and defining experience, to say the least. Traversing through the early stages of the position, such as move-in, training, and meeting my residents, couldn’t have prepared me enough for the amazing experience that I have had thus far. Although I’ve had conversations with friends currently and previously in the position, and have had my own past experiences with RAs, I genuinely did not know what to expect when it was my turn to take on the job. This unfamiliarity with the job and uncertainty of what to expect, although daunting at first, were relieved very early on by realizing the impact I was making through my position. The first of my long-term goals is to develop our floor/ residence hall into a place where residents feel that this is their “home away from home.” I think it’s extremely important in college, and at this point of our lives as young adults, to have a place where we feel we belong. It’s often difficult for residents to feel a sense of home and community where they are out of their comfort zone, so I feel that I need help create this for them in our residence hall. Another goal that I have for my community is to help my residents develop their social capital. From our reading, OECD Insights: Human Capital, we know that social capital is “For the sake of simplicity, however, we can think of social capital as the links, shared values and understandings in society that enable individuals and groups to trust each other and so work together” (Brian, 2007). Based on this, it’s important for me that my residents learn the importance of the connections that they create. These connections can be long lasting and lead to a plethora of opportunities personally and professionally, for example, in their future career paths. Lastly, my third goal for the community is to help my residents develop their self-sufficiency, a skill that they can take into their everyday lives, inside and outside of the residence hall. Self-sufficiency, which I see as being able to handle and operate …show more content…
I’ve come to realize that although there are rules and policies that we uphold, as with any job, it’s a position of trial and error, more so than many other jobs. This is because in dealing with so many different people, there is no “one size, fits all” formula. Developing a community is a process that takes time, and is something that can’t be done without genuinely caring about residential life and the experience of your residents. Overall, I believe having my distinct goals for the community outlined will give me a guide of how to best engage and promote the develop of my residents. I also believe that recognizing my community challenges early on will help me to better navigate through them when and if they arise. With the amazing residents that I have and the experiences that we look forward to having, I foresee my community being an immense

On Tuesday, August, 23, 2016 at approximately 07:00 PM, resident Ung Gi Koh came and asked Resident Assistant (RA) Todd McKinney about a "awkward situation" of how to carry unique, and possibly embarrassing personal items over to University Gates Apartments. RA McKinney suggested putting it in his suitcase that resident Koh had lying on the floor. Resident Koh liked the idea and took RA McKinney 's idea. At approximately 7:15 PM, resident Koh returned from his journey with the suitcase and told RA McKinney that his girlfriend at University Gates Apartment, was going to come get the items. Later at approximately 7:40 PM resident Koh returned to RA McKinney 's suite and explained that resident Koh 's suitcase had been stolen.…

I anticipate my lifestyle changing a small bit, if I was to become a Residential Assistant. Although the position of being an RA comes before any other commitments, I feel that it will still be possible to balance my social life and continually see my friends. The only main change I foresee is that I will have to watch how I act and what I say. I need to set an example and be a role model. People cannot do that if they act irresponsibly and negatively with their friends or residents.…

My interest in being a resident advisor (“RA”) stems from my desire to work intimately, candidly, and meaningfully with other people. My most rewarding relationships have all been built upon some mutually meaningful connection, whether it arises from experiencing grueling football practices together, sharing a common set of interests with someone, or working with others to finish a challenging project. I see the RA position as a way to maximize my likelihood of making these meaningful connections with other individuals, those individuals, in this case, being my future residents and fellow RAs. However, I am not applying to this position for the sole purpose of making friends, and I appreciate that the role of the RA is not always that of a friend. Even so, enhancing the lives of other individuals, with or without a corresponding friendship, is sufficiently fulfilling in and of itself.…

While attending the Community Board meeting that focused on youth and education, the community was able to express their concerns with local programs and educational issues in a receptive forum. The topic of education was not limited to just schooling, as discussions involving youth leadership program updates, LGBT needs, and family workshops took place as well. The leadership program being discussed provided jobs to youth and included teachers and parents in improving the physical environment of East Harlem. The community members present thought it was important to let the youth who were involved in the program be given the chance to choose their own projects. The discussion about the status of the educational facilities proved that the education…

As a student in college there is a dreaded community that we all eventually become a part of. Most freshman, like myself, experience the first step of “adulting” by moving away from their parents and into a shared space with their academic peers. The lucky few move in with acquaintances or even friends to avoid the worst part of sharing a new space, the unknown. While the rest of us veer off into the dark and mysterious path of random selection and convenient strangers; the complex and often complicated society of college roommates.…

Community responsibility has impacted my residential experience to a great extent. Living in the dorms, especially that of Belk, I have found that having various responsibilities, such as cleaning the lounge to participating in hall activities, has helped me to bond with my hall mates. Community responsibility has enhanced my residential experience, and if I were to become a Hall Counselor, I would want to incorporate some sort of shared responsibility that all members of my hall can take part in. For example, my current counselors made it a responsibility for all hall members to take part in ensuring that the lounge and bathroom are kept orderly to help alleviate the mess that our great janitorial staff would have to otherwise clean up. Due…
