Personal Narrative: My Experience At The Open House Party

Improved Essays
For my field notes, I was a participant observer amongst a similarly classified group of people (fraternity life), in three different scenarios. The first scenario was at a Greek philanthropy event, hosted jointly by a fraternity and a sorority, with the goal of raising funds for UConn’s Violence Against Women Protection Program. My second experience as a participant observer was at an open fraternity party, meaning that any outside guests were theoretically welcome to attend. Lastly, I attended a fraternity date night, which is when each fraternity member can invite one date to the otherwise typical house party. At the philanthropy event, I did not notice any specific behaviors that seemed to be out of the ordinary—it is essentially what …show more content…
Men and women I saw earlier in the day seemed to have transformed into completely different creatures; many women were wearing much more revealing clothing, were much more eager to mingle with males, and seemed to be much less composed. Similarly, many males looked around the room, paying much more attention to females than they had earlier in the night. I was surprised about the daytime to nighttime transformation. It was almost frustrating to notice how much inhibitions had been lowered and how what seemed to be a “normal” group earlier in the day turned into a group on the prowl to find a mate. I felt more uncomfortable during this experience—I did not like having sweaty arms touch me, seeing female undergarments everywhere I looked, and feeling somewhat out of place. Unlike at the philanthropy event, I felt the need to conform in order to fit in with the rest of the group. “Fitting in” included screaming the words to songs, trying to talk to some of the fraternity men, and running with three other girls (holding hands) to the …show more content…
It was surprising to see how much different I felt being associated with the group in the nighttime than I did in the daytime. While I was surprised at the level of apparent normalcy in the daytime philanthropy event, I was slightly disappointed and nearly disgusted to see how much the same individuals changed after just a few hours. My experience really showed me how much an occasion can influence a group, its appearance, its actions, and the overall feelings in

“Are fraternities acting in an ethical manner, requiring good behavior and punishing poor decisions? Or are they keeping a cool distance from the mayhem, knowing full well that it occurs with regularity?” (Flanagan). Many individuals have never taken out the time to research and study some of the hidden secrets about fraternities. However, author Caitlin Flanagan wrote “The Dark Power of Fraternities” published in 2014 in The Atlantic, and she argues all of the hidden flaws within fraternities that are often covered up.…

If you had asked any of my peers for a description of who I am, they would have said that I was someone who was shy, and possibly even a bit awkward. This was a personality trait that I had been struggling with throughout the majority of my life. I had grown up as an only child, incessantly feeling out of place among my peers. It wasn’t until the middle of my freshman year of high school that I gained the self-confidence I had only dreamed about.…

Before we step into the real world of college, we hear about all the different sororities and fraternities, what goes on, what they act like, and what they do. We all have seem to have our different views of what “Greek life” really is, but have we really observed the people and the things they do? Breaking Stereotypes One Step At a Time Greek life contributes a lot to the average college community. Whether it being, giving student’s connections, philanthropy, or providing a fun atmosphere for several stressed college students. The affect it has on the students individually is huge too. Fraternity’s and sorority’s push each member to reach outside their comfort zone, and to strive for excellence in academics, community involvement, and personal development. “Greeks all speak a “language” that they learn in the process of becoming part of their fraternity/sorority.…

As president of my high school's Key Club, it is my job to organize service activities for our members to volunteer in. One of these activities is the local haunted house sponsored by the Front Royal Little League. This fundraiser for the little league started when Mr. Bryan Binnix stepped in to save it from plummeting. Mr. Binnix discovered that the program wasn't making enough profits until his brother, Mr. Bobby Binnix, wanted to make a change, thus they proposed the idea of having an annual haunted house. Since the first year in 2012, the fundraiser has raised approximately $9,500.00.…

I have always known that I wanted to serve in the justice system; the concept has constantly been reaffirmed in my mind as new life experiences continue to lead me in that direction. The problem with that particular direction is that it has several paths to take, and deciding which path to take takes a lot of time and consideration in order to make the best choice. Over time, I have realized that my individual strengths and personality are best suited to succeed in the legal field rather than the political or law enforcement areas of the justice system. One of my first experiences that led me to this conclusion was my involvement in Big Brothers Big Sisters. As a Big Sister, I learned that there are many children in the world that need an…

Greek life on campus is an aspect of upper education that is publicized often, many proclaiming the social and educational benefits of living with your peers, but has a significant amount of negative stigma attached to it. Although the tales told of fraternities and sororities are sometimes exaggerated, there are many more cases where Greek life organizations have garnered copious amounts of attention for controversial behavior. In Fraternity and Sorority Alcohol Use: Does Race Matter?, Michael Capece, David Schantz, and Rebecca Wakeman expound upon one of these behaviors, specifically detailing the general perception of alcohol consumption within fraternities and sororities and across two different races, from the point of view of research.…

I volunteered at Book Thing, which is a non-profit organization that gives away donated books to the community. I chose Book Thing because I was interested in what the organization does and giving them a lending hand. Before I visited I was apprehensive about going because I didn’t know what to expect. I thought I would physically be handing books out to people, and interacting with people making personal connections. I expected it to be little to no organization, just volunteers willing to lend a helping hand.…

In the article named “Girl Hunt” written by David Grazian in 2007, Grazian studies how young men show their masculinity. Grazian studies this through the setting of the downtown nightlife. Grazian figures out that there are three things that characterize girl hunting, these three things are performative and ceremonial, some form of homosocial activity, and lastly a collective activity which means to action together as a group to heighten one’s status and achieve a common objective. In this article review, I will break down how hetero male (ideally students) utilize the energy of aggregate ceremonials of homo-sociality to perform sexual ability and manly personality by "girl hunting".
