On Thursday November 19th, 88 days from now, I will fight in my first sanctioned amateur boxing match. Here’s how this happened:
Over the course of my twenties and into my mid-forties, I gained an enormous amount of weight. You know I was a big guy. Even as a vegetarian, and then vegan, I touted the healthfulness of my no-meat lifestyle but ignored the quantities food I consumed. I was fat, suffering from chronic leg and knee pain. And I could not really even keep up with my three children.

Then I bought wraps and better gloves. Now, for the past three months I’ve been taking boxing lessons. It’s very challenging and I frequently cannot even make it through the ninety minute session. As a lifelong boxing fan, I really didn’t comprehend the skill level and training and timing needed to box. It’s mentally exhausting— but I’m no longer bored. You know what you want to do when you practice something intensely? You want to try it out. As it turns out, there is this thing called Corporate Fight Night where people who are not paid fighters, can go try out their skills. It’s a pretty cool event because it raises a ton of money for the Children’s Advocacy Network which helps out homeless, abused and orphaned children.
So, there it is. I intend to get in the ring and fight. It’s the next step. In all candor, it’s intimidating. Just sparring is emotionally exhausting. I’ve only been hit a few times now and it sucked the courage right out of me.
