Reflection On Homosexuality In The United States

Improved Essays
My first question (http://goaskalice.columbia.edu/answered-questions/human-sexuality) I chose from the website goaskalice.com was, “How common is homosexuality in the United States?” I chose this question because as I straight, white, male, I rarely think of my identity and it interests and upsets me that so many have to deal with constantly wondering if they are alone. My brother is gay and I know struggled a lot through his childhood and still has to go through therapy because he for many years didn’t feel comfortable coming out. I was please by the beginning of the answer because “Alice” said “above all it’s important to understand that sexuality is a complicated issue.” I think that this is definitely true, and people cannot just be put …show more content…
The American College Health Association National College Health Assessment, that is conducted annual, proved that the majority of participants had either no sexual partners or only one during the previous year. However, those same people, said that they thought their peers were having sex with at least three partners that year. Most thought they were having sex less than everyone else. Many people graduate college with minimal or no sexual experience at all. In fact, many find it exciting to be someone’s first sexual experience. Therefore, it is unlikely that lack of experience will hurt someone. Alice went on to say that the most important thing is to do whatever is most important to you. It doesn’t matter what sexual experiences others are having, all that matters is what you want to be doing. Alice reminded the reader that if no partners are available at first, there is always masturbation to begin with. While she admitted it would be tough with a dorm roommate, she said that experimenting with different types of masturbation, with different fantasies, and different positions can be a good way to blow of some steam. Alice finishes with nice motivational advice. “Whatever you decide, do it for fun or for love, but mainly do it for you. No need to act out of fear of others judgments — you 'll be just as desirable whether virgin or seasoned sexual …show more content…
It’s important to understand what you mean by an open relationship. If your partner thinks that an open relationship means you can only hook-up with other people, but you must save the romance for the two of you, and you break that boundary that could ruin your relationship.
In my past experiences with open relationships, I have noticed that one party almost always loses interest and the relationship slowly fades. One of them fakes it, while the other one falls for it, hoping what they once had didn’t truly drift away. Eventually they both realize and both move on. I have rarely seen an open relationship to work. The main reason for this is that open relationships are often used in already difficult situations. Overall, if you can stay away from an open relationship, from my first-hand research, I would. This last question, I really identify with. This fifth question, (http://goaskalice.columbia.edu/answered-questions/dealing-jealousy-relationship) is about dealing with jealousy in a relationship. The question was about a boyfriend who is in a relationship where both he and his girlfriend both get very jealous. He doesn’t mind her jealousy, while she gets angry when his boyfriend becomes jealous because she feels it means he doesn’t trust her. He wants to know how to deal with this without causing another fight. (And honestly I do

There is famous research on the subject of dialectical tensions; Baxter and Montgomery (1996) in their book “Relating Dialogues and Dialectics” asserted there are three different dialectical tensions, and six different parts; the first is “Autonomy vs Connectedness”, or the need between independence and connection. The second dialectical tension is “Novelty vs Predictability (or spontaneity)”, or the need between wanting new, fresh things vs. the familiar. The third and final dialectical tension is “Openness vs Closedness”—this dialectical tension focuses on the need between wanting to share information vs. maintaining privacy in the relationship (Baxter & Montgomery, 1996). While these six can operate as opposites, they are not necessarily mutually exclusive; relationships can maintain some sort of openness with…

While reviewing the article “When You Are a Gay Boy in America” by Danny Zaccagnino, I learned about many of the positive aspects of the LBGTQ community, while also gaining an understanding of what it is like to live a day in that community. I was entertained throughout the majority of the article and in the end, I could not be happier that he found his angel. While the ending was enjoyable, it was heartbreaking to see some the things he went through and how scary it could be for him at times. One thing that I am taking away from this article is that the technology and the media can often times ruin things for many people. There were two instances in the article that the boy received negative attention from the media, which stemmed from the…

Criticizers of abstinence-only curriculums think that abstinence-only programs are ineffective at reducing the initiation of adolescents participating in sexual activities. Rather than research showing that abstinence programs are not effective, there are simply few studies that have examined the impact of abstinence-only education on student sexual behavior (Denny & Young, 2006). The studies that are available show that abstinence-only curriculums are effective in increasing knowledge and decreasing sexual behavior. The following section will present studies that examine abstinence-only sexual education. Family Action Model for Empowerment (FAME), an abstinence-only program, was created for parents and teens to develop more open communication, be able…
