Reflective Essay: The Toulmin Method

Improved Essays
For the argumentative essay, there was no need for additional research. We kept the same topic, so I was able to simply utilize the same sources from the expository essay. This is why I initially believed it was going to be an easy process. While going into the essay, my first priority was learning how to use the Toulmin method. The Toulmin method was difficult since I had never used it before, therefore I was prepared to do some research on it before I began writing. Upon learning some aspects of the Toulmin method I began the outline which was given to me by my professor, Ewan. The outline helped in organizing some parts of my essay such as the body paragraphs and gathering some info for my counter argument. Overall, the essay came out to be much harder than I previously had thought it would be. When writing the essay, I began by using the strategy I had used previously for my expository essay. The process consisted of using an outline, and expanding from there. The outline I had was the one that I had been given, where we had to write body paragraphs first and just have brief points for the counter argument and rebuttal. Same for the argumentative thesis, which was what led and glued my essay together. My thesis started with the same form …show more content…
The argumentative essay was probably one of the hardest essays I had to write thus far this semester. It required a lot of focus and a detailed outline before I was even able to begin forming my first full draft. Just when I thought I had it, there was always something that made me realize I had to fix it or change it. In conclusion, this argumentative essay opened up my viewpoint on many more possibilities of how to structure my essay. I am now going away from the standard five paragraph essay, and I am ready to tackle long lengthy essays. A good detailed outline will always help and I now know how to create one thanks to this

According to Hacker and Sommers’ in “Constructing Reasonable Arguments”, taking a stand on a controversial topic, swaying the reader with evidence and analysis, and citing all sources used within an essay are the stepping-stones to produce a well manufactured argumentative essay. The main goal is to persuade the reader to choose the writer's side of the argument over the opposing side in an informative way. Arguments happen everywhere all the time, which means there is more than one way to look at an issue. It's recommended to research the debatable topic and look at it from multiple angles. I wrote one “source-based argumentative essay” in high school: my final essay from sophomore English. The guidelines were to write a four to eight page paper on any topic of your choice, but the thesis of the paper had to come across clearly. At the time, my personal goals were to write about something no one else would, as well as get an A in the class. As a future collegiate writer, I feel as though I have the habits and potential strengths to be successful, but my biggest weakness is that I do not know how to write a professional essay and I am a reluctant editor.…

My writing experience: I didn’t start to read until I was in first grade. Every week we would go to library to check-out two books and take a test on the books we read on a computer. Every day in English we read a short story to ourselves then we would play games dealing with the story to make it fun. To be honest I never really did a lot of writing in Elementary , Middle, or High school so I can’t pinpoint when I started writing. In essay writing I learned its always good to express yourself with your own opinion.…

Unless I have a very strict and short deadline, my writing process begins with thinking and reading about the topic or subject matter of my paper. I don’t do a structured free writing or idea mapping session, but rather just read a bit to get familiar with the subject matter and to get my brain thinking about the subject. Once I am ready to begin writing. I start with the thesis statement is on the topic, is formatted correctly, and matches the purpose of the essay.…

The task of this assignment was to write 5 to 6 pages of an argumentative essay that focuses on an issue that I care about in Chicago. I was also required to use a minimum of 5 sources to support my claim. In this writing project, I had some challenges I had to overcome to successfully finish my writing project three because for the argumentative essay I wrote in high school, I was free to use any sources while I was required to use only scholarly sources for my writing project three.…
