Saturday morning. An early Colorado sunrise comes in through the window, waking me. I get up and put on my sweatpants, warm from just getting out of the dryer. I bring a duffel bag downstairs, and drop it in the front room. I shuffle into the dimly lit kitchen, and grab a bagel. I put it in the toaster, then spread some honey nut cream cheese on it. I walk out my front door, grabbing my duffel bag on the way. I throw it in the back of the truck, and hop in the driver’s seat. I turn the key over, plug my phone into the aux cord, and pull out of the neighborhood. As I drive, I begin to feel anxious, stressed out. Today is the first playoff game of my senior year of football. I search through my phone to find the right song while at a stop light. I find it, and in an instant, my anxiety turns into pure adrenaline. I pull into the high school parking lot, “Back in Black” cranked. The subs under the back seat shaking the glass on my mirrors. I’m ready to go. I brave the brisk October morning air and go inside the locker room. I see many of my friends and classmates loading up their bags for the game. I see one kid passing out painkillers like candy. At this point in the season, if you’re not hurt, you’re not trying hard enough. A few other pass around a sharpie, scribbling initials and phrases onto their wrist tape. I breathe in, barley noticing the smell of a high school locker room.
