The Importance Of Self Monitoring

This week was the first trial of not using my self-monitoring forms with my first period class. The behavior problems overall stayed low. However, I still continue to struggle with the same student in that class, and it seems to be getting worse, not better. This week he was absent two days, and two days he was removed from the class. The days he came I struggled getting him to take off his headphones and put his cellphone away, which happened to be during a quiz. The assistant principal ended up being called and he was removed from the room. This is isn’t really how I would have handled it personally. I asked my teacher for help when he was not responding to me hoping she would talk to him because she has a better rapport with the student. I have been using several different methods of instruction. I find that the students are more successful when they read the parts of the book that aren’t so science content heavy and they are better able to process what they are reading. Then, when I reach a chapter that is very science content heavy I use guided notes to help them understand the material. This week I also used guided practice answering analysis type questions and another frayer model vocabulary activity to help improve their analyzing and writing skills. This week in that class one of my students really struggled this week in terms of behavior, she has yelled at me and the other students in the class. She got into a fight with a student and used inappropriate language, which was really out of character for her. My teacher took her out and had a long conversation with her. On Friday, she made one of my other students upset so my teacher and I pulled her and student out and had them talk about their issues. I will need to keep reinforcing social skills with
