When mothers tell their daughters they’re going to India, many imagine shopping among the heavily populated, colourful streets of New Delhi or Mumbai. However, my mother, being the peculiar mother she is, decided we’re going to the northeast state of Uttarakhand, which borders Nepal, to hike the treacherous Himalayas! I was somewhat shocked at first, but the idea intrigued my adventurous side; I only had one more year of highschool left, so what’s the worst that could happen? That was my first mistake… Here I am, in another country, 4000 metres above the rice fields below. Why would anyone ever agree to hike such a difficult, narrow, steep mountain? “Come on, Mom! My legs were clearly too short to make the jump, which became evident through the excruciatingly painful scratches on my hands and the bruises on both my knees.
