Personal Essay: My First Job

My first job was, of course, in retail. I assumed it would be a great job, considering I love people. However, after working in retail for a year I have a better insight of how people can be. I didn’t think much of people who worked in customer service. It only took a few customers, treating me, as well as my coworkers like scum for me to change my view. Along with the terrible hours were required to work, rude customers, disrespect showed to the store, and the short lived coworkers patience was my new way of life. I learned a great deal about life and myself throughout this job, I’m glad I was able to experience that. I’ll never stop loving to work with people, although I wouldn’t aim to work in retail again. Christmas, New Years and Easter were our unpaid holidays off. Retail is created for people that lack the desire to have lives outside of the work place. I was hired in the summer, which was no problem, due to the fact that college classes had not started yet. Each of the employee’s were given roughly two days off each week. However, when classes are two days out of the week, you end up having no days off in the week. Managers and corporate care of nothing besides the store, it’s their job. Most of the people I worked with were unhappy with the conditions of the store. While some people stayed and complained, others left quite quickly. I surpassed countless people that had started long before me. It was disheartening to watch so profuse amounts of people leave. The store was exceedingly understaffed, however, watching people leave while the store was in distress displayed to make the job worse. Continually having half the staff required, and no sign of change at any point made employment terrible. Even though, the hours we worked went up due to a minuscule staff we all grew
