Ever since writing my first Istep essay, I have loved writing. I remember preparing for the writing portion of the Istep in third grade. We spent several weeks covering and practicing different aspects of writing. I would become uncomfortable and have panic attacks with each practice test. The thought of taking the Istep made me sick to my stomach. I was so nervous about writing an essay in an allotted amount of time. I remember one day I had such a bad panic attack during a practice test that I ran to the bathroom and vomited. My anxiety was so bad I had to go to the doctor. My sleep cycle was greatly affected by the stress, and I would often not sleep well.
The panic attacks got so bad my teacher spoke with my parents; they allowed me take the tests in the principal's office. While I

I had reviewed and studied past work, and I was ready to prove to myself that I could write well. As soon as the test started, I read the directions as quickly as I could and then began writing. In all the excitement, I had forgotten to brainstorm. I soon realized that I had no idea what to write about. I discovered I was in control. I did not have to worry about fitting in every planned detail. I truly understood my love of writing through this experience. When I was trying to think of something to write, I discovered something wonderful about the writing process. For the first time, I thought of writing as an artform. Before I wrote the Istep essay, I always thought of writing as systematic, boring, bland, and stale. I would always plan my essays out in advance, which led to work lacking creativity and challenge. I was changed by the way I was able to write the story. My previous essays were simple and teacher chosen. Naturally, I assumed all essays were boring. Through the Istep essay I was able to see that writing could be enjoyable. Experiencing the creativity and freedom of writing changed my

Freshman Composition I’s course objective was designed to help students “focus on developing and expressing ideas clearly and effectively to communicate with various audiences for various purposes and occasions, through written, oral, aural, and visual venues by means of individual and team projects.” Throughout this course my classmates and I reviewed principles of the writing process, including: planning, logical organizational, development strategies, revision, and editing, we were also introduced to rhetorical techniques and vigorous library research. With those techniques, this course has helped my classmates and I develop critical thinking skills like: summary, paraphrase, analysis, evaluation, and synthesis of multiple sources. Before I began this class my writing process consisted of simply being assigned as assignment by my high school english teachers and coming up with an essay at the top of my head that properly fit the space requirement and prompt that I would then turn in the day it was due.…

In the article What is “Academic” Writing by L. Lennie Irvin, a personal connection made was in his statement, “As a new college student, you may have a lot of anxiety and questions about the writing you’ll do in college”(Irvin 3) and “[This will be your] only class(es)... where you will only focus on learning how to write”(Irvin 3). Indeed, as a college student in high school, my body shivers at the sound of the word ‘essay’; however, with the right teaching, I have come a long way. Assuredly, in class we have only focused on writing ethics, which in turn has helped me practice to strengthen my writing skills. Although writing essays can at times trigger my anxiety due to cluelessness and countless questions, as essays go by, I become more…

As a, Agender Queer Chicanx I navigate the world as someone that constantly has to evaluate the way I look and behave otherwise I risk putting myself in danger. When I walk into a room I have to make sure that my demeanor and vocal tone are palatable, or risk being profiled and seen as a danger to those around me. When I see law enforcement, I have to automatically start accessing all of my actions of the day to make sure I did not break some law or raise my voice to high. My daily day walking about and taking public transit is clouded with the need to be presentable and be an upstanding citizen or else. All that at a personal level, but maintained by a society that forces me to conform, adapt and be seen as “one of the good ones” in order to live and be seen as worthy of human decency.…

Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. After this came an analysis of a visual text, followed by a research paper. The narrative was the easiest to write; however, I acquired important skills for writing the other two, which were in a less familiar format. With the three essays, I learned about my own writing skills and habits concerning development and critical thinking, time management, and organization.…

I'm glad to help you! I probably spent 30 min out of class time on AP Physics and Chem-- I honestly just worked really hard in class and did my HW/reviewed my notes the night before tests. That's totally dependent on how good your teachers are and your own natural ability in the sciences. I did a minimal amount of outside work for Lang, only really for projects because we did all our essays in class. APUSH took like hours each night, because it was a lot of reading and I'm a slow reader.…

My writing was influenced by the time I had spent in school. To begin with, English was one of my weakest subjects in school. Every essay, paragraph or test I took ended up in a failing or a barely passing grade. Free writing was really bad for me because I would never know what to write about. It would be easy for most people…

They may not always flow or fit together as well as they should but they are complete sentences. Writing is unquestionably hard for me.…

To be completely honest I have mixed feelings about writing and I don’t really have any memorable experiences that made me feel this way, it is just the experiences that I have had with the subject while trying to apply it. I struggle with what to write down mostly and creativity in general and I don’t really excel at any part of it. If I were to say I “excel” at anything it would be revising my work and adding to it. At the end of the semester I hope that I have relearned some key writing elements that lack of practice has caused me to lose.…

English Composition I taught me a lot about myself, including how to be a better college student, through the process of writing. At the beginning of the year, I was not very excited about having to write argumentative papers. This is because I did not care enough about the assigned topics to have an opinion. But, I did learn a lot that I would not have known otherwise from having to research information about the topics I chose to write about. For example, in paper #2, I wrote about the niqab and how I believe that it is oppressive to women.…
