I interviewed my seventy-five year old grandpa Donnie, researched the Voyles lineage book that my grandma Arlene helped compile, and talked with my dad in order to find out more about my family’s history. According to Grandpa Donnie, it all began in 1759 when Jacob Voils, his wife, and his four sons landed in Port Charleston from Wales. Jacob was a poor man and could not afford the family’s way to Charleston. Desperate, he made a deal with the ship’s captain to indenture his oldest son William Voils as a crew hand for four years in exchange for the family’s way. Upon regaining his freedom, William furiously changed the spelling of his last name to Voyles to break all ties from his father Jacob.…

Growing up in a family that did not communicate that much, I was not very close with my mother of father. My mom and I did tend to talk more but not about personal things in our life. Me and my dad however always fought. I have a few good memories with him (he loved teaching me how to make home made biscuits.) which I always enjoyed on those rare occasions he was in a good mood. But, 90% of the time we were fighting.…

What is family? Defining family is not simply and academic exercise and even experts on the family still have trouble defining it. According to the Census Bureau, the current definition of a family is “two or more people united by blood or legal degree (law).” A more descriptive modern definition would be viewing family more as psychological bond, a group of close people who care for, respect, and love one another. In the US today, families are organized in many ways.…

As I sit and think of what a family consist of, I am reminded of how gracious God is. Without going into too much detail, I was raised in four different families types, that included: nuclear family, foster family, step-family and a single parent family. My family consists of my mom, dad, sister and myself. We are just missing the dog named Fido, a ‘57 Chevy and a recipe book of casseroles to become the perfect 1950’s model suburban family. My sister is ten years younger than I, so we do not have the classic sibling rivalry in competing for attention.…

Others are estimated from their biological family and may seek familial structure in likeminded people. I define my family as a mixture of both of these concepts. As RuPaul once famously said, “As gay people we get to choose our families, and my chosen family includes millions of brave men and women across this country and around the world.”…
