My First Field Placement

Improved Essays
At the beginning of the term I got myself into my first field placement for the education certificate that I am pursuing in order to become a middle school or high school teacher. I am very excited to be doing what I know I will enjoy and that is to educate kids and be a role model to them. This was the beginning to my first field placement. It was an experience I will never forget. This has been something that I will get to enjoy and talk about throughout my life because the amount of happiness that I would see on the kids faces were great to have around our peers. I did two field placements and that was part of the school garden project then the main one I would attend was The Village School for food education. Before I began either one of …show more content…
It was a three day field placement that happened throughout the term. They were spaced out which was one at the beginning of the term then one towards the middle of the term and the last day of the school garden project was at the end of the term. Having the small amount of time at Briggs Middle School felt like I was welcomed there. The staff were very nice and fun to work with. SK did a good job leading Bryan, Kaitlyn and I. The first day at the school we introduced ourselves to the students. When the groups came to me I had them taste the plants. I explained to the students what the plants were and I had them decide whether they wanted to go ahead and try the plants or not. A couple of the kids weren’t sure about having to try the plants out because they weren’t sure if they were going to like it but some of the first couple students that were brave enough did try it and they said that they liked it. After that happened their decision to try the plants influenced the other students who weren’t sure about eating them at first to go ahead and try them out after a little bit of trust was gained. Some of the students thought the plants were good and others thought that other plants weren’t so good. I got to try a couple of the plants and I had the same experience with the different plants. The students favorite plant was the cilantro. A lot of them were talking about how they like their tacos with cilantro. That made them want to eat more. After a while I had to tell the 8th graders that they had to slow down on their eating because the next class of 8th graders were going to have to do the same thing. In the reading of Ripe for Change has a good example of how students are still able to learn about what having the school gardens do to benefit

Field Experience at Wildwood and Ernest Manning My cohort of ten was assigned to visit two schools over a two-week period with a full week dedicated to each location. The two schools were Wildwood elementary and Ernest Manning high school and while their relative closeness to one another would suggest that some Wildwood students may eventually be at Ernest Manning, they are opposites in terms of their status, how they carry themselves, and what they believe to be most important for students. Wildwood elementary is an old school as observed from its small and outdated architecture. Classes are small and at times claustrophobic, especially when packed with 20-25 of the nearly 600 students making it difficult if not impossible to navigate the…

Having experienced this, I learned that my passion was in making a difference in other people's’ lives. I know I am driven to spend the rest of my life doing it.…
